1339340 2013-05-02 23:08:00 Yeah and almost all USB Hubs are only USB 2.0, and on top of that it'll likely be drawing all its power from a single USB port. Powered USB hubs can help, sometimes, but for HDDs its not worth the hassle.

Maybe plug the keyboard / mouse / webcam / printer whatever into the Hub and have the USB HDD direct.

If I sent it more than once, I apologize. It was unintentional.

1339342 2013-05-03 12:13:00 On the subject of Hubs, I've had various types fail on me over the years, so if you must use a hub (I'm not going to crawl under my desk everytime I want to plug in something different, and I don't use the front ports) what is the current recommended brand?

Cheers

What is the problem with front hubs?
I found that they didn't always work on my old XP machine.
And what Please did you mean by, " what is the current recommended brand?"

Ah, I get it, they are all effectively plugged into the same port. Yea, makes sense. Thanks

1339344 2013-05-03 20:24:00 Pretty much, and your motherboard can't pump enough power down that one port.

Same for front ports, they never supply as much power.

Problem solved. It was the hub! Thanks for the help. :)

1339346 2013-05-05 10:14:00 I have 4 of the MyPassport USB3 HDDs. The first one 1TB the others 2TB.

I need to get one or two of these (2tb, 2.5") but they're not the cheapest things around. Have you ever had them fail on you?

No failures . I like them, particularly the lack of external power supply compared with other USB drives of similar TB . The 2TB firmware is a step up from the early 1TB model .

My 1TB requires power to be removed before it will be recognised on startup . This is a problem if the MB supplies USB power when the computer is off . The 2TB drives don't do this

As someone mentioned here, it is a good idea to disconnect USB drives when not in use, because you can find them spinning needlessly and this will affect life .

My 2TB drives die down when the computer is off even though the USB port supplies power to them BUT if I turn the power off and for some reason turn it on again without starting the computer, the drives continuously spin at full speed and get quite hot . I hate to think what that does to their life

Of course, these behaviours depend on the model of MB, the USB drivers, the current WD firmware, etc YMMV

My 1 TB WD. drive with most up to date firmware has a built in sleep timer. No risk of it running on.
It never feels even warm.
