1314335 2012-11-25 18:58:00 Aha, now Hoegarden is real good. As is Erdinger, which is on tap here in Stratford. Mind you they're not NZ brewed, but throw them in to show the choices available now.

Erdinger. Mmm. Especially on tap.

1314337 2012-11-25 20:27:00 I attended Beer-vana in Wellington this year and they had some awesome beers and some other beers (as mentioned no such thing as a bad beer) .

Speights Gold is my drop of choice however given the $$ these days I'll happily pick up a $20 box of 15 Haagen or Wild Buck (good for a laugh with the Bull or Buck questions on the bottles - Right Chill?) . However if I'm feeling in a mood to splurge . . . can't go past an Abott Ale . . .

If you ever venture to Wellywood I do suggest a little place called the Tap Haus or their partner Bru Haus . . . they specialise in Craft Beer .

I even tried Watermelon beer . . . it was far too sweet to be considered beer though . . . maybe a Cider? ;)

1314341 2012-11-25 23:11:00 The one beer I liked was Lion super it was around in the late 70s. Only needed a few jugs to put you on your ear. prefect (6291)
1314342 2012-11-26 00:04:00 Top of my list of beer memories...

Shakespeare Tavern in Auckland did a wonderful beer called Bottoms Up about 10 years ago. Matured in Whiskey casks and about 9% from memory.

8 wired IPA used to be the equivalent of beer chardonnay before they expanded. It still tastes decent, but nowhere near what it used to.

Top marks to Bruhaus in Wellington. SOBA members get a decent discount too (maybe 20/30%)

The 8 wired IPA reminds me of the craft beer problem. It's awesome if done by the same brewer in the same way, but as they expand, it tends to get worse.

Yes I am. Go to Malones just by the bottom roundabout. They used to have Kilkenny on tap as well (might still).

I like a dark beer in the winter (generally but not exclusively) and lighter or lager in the warm weather.
Germans, Belgians and Czechs know their brewing and we're starting to click onto it here as well with our craft beers. But the big breweries when they try and do something "posh" or niche; they just don't seem to be able to "cut the mustard" (getting picky in me old age).
