Cheaper usually to buy in bulk from RS or Farnell, or eBay(!) which is what I do now.

The demise of home electronics hobbying is more or less world wide.

I think that may be a bit out of date...

Companies like Adafruit, Sparkfun and Arduino are doing well, there's projects posted all the time on sites like Hackaday etc - and Silicon Chip still publishes projects every month!

1314565 2012-11-25 00:33:00 . They are exactly the same at every other shitty electronics peddler in NZ.

Electonics? They haven't done that since David Reid.
They've been an appliance shop for ages, an overpriced one. Look at what they charge for a USB cable or printer cable.

Some of their stuff is priced ok.

Lucky for us there is Jaycar.

I suppose we have to be grateful that Jaycar set up branches in NZ, though when I want anything it is easier to go online than to drive into Wellington.

There can't be much incentive these days for youngsters to get into the hobby.
I think it may have picked up a bit in the last couple of years with the Arduino (Mindkits are good to deal with there) and now the RaspberryPi.
