1314325 2012-11-24 03:31:00 Stout=stout :D How do think I ended up a fatty?
If I buy beer, it's usually Monteiths Black,
not a boutique beer by any stretch
but better than Tui and such in my opinion.

1314326 2012-11-24 03:39:00 I tried a really nice beer a few months back, but can't remember the name of it. I thought it might have been Stoke Amber, but as it turns out, that is a terrible beer. Greven (91)
1314327 2012-11-24 03:58:00 Today bought mikes organic lager from taranaki and mata wheat beer for the next taste test. New world have a pretty good range countdown less so. globe (11482)
1314328 2012-11-24 04:02:00 Husband crafts his own beer.
As far as I know it isn't named......perhaps "Scoffed" would do.

1314329 2012-11-24 04:04:00 Lager a pale imitation of real beer. I used to drink mostly ale but now mainly prefer the local stouts

I only used to drink ale when I was back in the UK. Never touch the stuff now, unless you count the odd Kilkenny

1314331 2012-11-24 18:15:00 Great list. I'm going to see if I can track down one or two of those and try them tonight. Might be hard to get in Auck tho

Harringtons is around at most Glengarry and Liquorland, ditto Stoke. The Mussell Inn and Founders I've seen at Farro and Village Winery in Mt Eden (they have a great range of craft beer). The others ... not so much, but beercellar.co.nz ships nationwide as does cultbeer.co.nz (affiliated with Hashigozake in Wellington, nice craft beer bar, that) and carry a great range of NZ beers.

Wanaka Beerworks has a couple of nice beers - including a cherry wheat beer that I reckon is the best of it's kind I've tasted. Hard to get hold of.

There's a growler station in Eden Terrace called Hopscotch that carries a selection (20 taps) of beer you can take home with you, and they cover a bunch of smaller NZ brewers, such as Garage Project, Funk Estate, and even the tiny Schippers (which you can only otherwise find on tap at OC Freehouse in Vulcan lane).

If you like hanging out with other craft beer afficionados, it's worth cheecking out SOBA (meet friday nights in the city, usually) and Hopful Thinkers (meet weds night, city or north shore). Most of the hopful thinkers also brew their own, and share it. :-)

I'm really disappointed that Emerson's got sold to Lion Nathan. The delicious Scotch Ale may never taste the same again. :-/

1314332 2012-11-25 08:00:00 Tuatara is excellent; they try to brew like well known English and European types i.e. Heffe for Belgian Leffe. Also Ardennes -very strong (Belgian). Bavarian style beer. IPA etc. All very good.

I like Mikes as well; http://www.organicbeer.co.nz/ We spent a happy afternoon there (too happy actually), last summer after a trail ride - we did have sober drivers. Stoke as well - that's excellent.

When we were in France a few years ago, an expat Englishman we met commented about how awful NZ beer was - he'd change his tune now if he sampled some of our craft beers. Mind you all the big brewers in any country brew pretty awful stuff; except perhaps Germany where I believe they have strict laws governing brewing that go back hundreds of years.
I just wish every success to NZ's boutique breweries and hope the big breweries don't squeeze them out!

1314333 2012-11-25 08:55:00 The mikes was a nice drop .

Found the mata wheat beer to fruity and wouldn't get it again . Not a patch on hoegarden but it seems there are 2 styles of cloudy wheat beers .

Aha, now Hoegarden is real good. As is Erdinger, which is on tap here in Stratford. Mind you they're not NZ brewed, but throw them in to show the choices available now.
