1313907 2012-11-22 17:49:00 Thanks for that link.
Back in the the day on National Radio, it could be switched on at random and most likely some light classical music would be heard. Now if it is randomly switched on it is pop that will be heard as a program break fill in.

I came across this photo of RNZ news readers, including your friend Boris, posted by Robert Taylor, together with several others, "Pictures taken in the 80's shortly before the government axe fell", it takes one back: www.flickr.com

Seems everything is aimed at the lowest common denominator these days, thank goodness for the internet.

Thanks for your link, will send on to Boris.
As a matter of interest, Boris is having trouble with his computer, which is being fixed by someone who was recommended by someone from P.F1up in Kaitaia.

1313908 2012-11-22 19:39:00 Meh, it's the BBC, ITV were (and i mean WERE) the better of the two back in the day. No channel has ever really come close to ITV's Thames Television. And ITV had "Ready Steady Go!" which was what prompted Top of the Pops to come along. Ready Steady Go was far better in that it had huge major acts on a lot of the time, and it later went to live performances, as apposed to Pop's crappy Lip sycing. goodiesguy (15316)

Absolute Bull, you didn't grow up in that era. TOTP was THE show hardly anyone watched Ready Steady Go due to Mike Read's crappy accent. TOTP had a huge fan base in the 70's probably due to having Pans people

Who is Mike Read? I think you might have a different program.

Ready Steady Go aired on Associated Rediffusion from August 1963 – December 1966 when it was decided to finish at the height of it's fame. The show was hosted by Keith Fordyce and Cathy McGowan with ocasional presenters Dusty Springfield, David Gell and Michael Aldred. The show was known for it's more informalness and one of the precursors to Top of the Pops which did not debut until New Years Day 1964.

Prior to Top of the Pops on the BBC, all they had was The Six Five Special in 1957 and 58, and they didn't enter the game again until NYD 1964. Prior to that, ALL british music shows aired on ITV, with shows like Oh Boy and Boy Meets Girls which both were cloned in america as ABC's Shindig!, Thank Your Lucky Stars which although featured a BBC DJ Brian Matthew it also aired on ITV. Top of the Pops did not become the Big huge show it became untill the late 60's early 70's. Top of the Pops only ever got The Beatles in the studio once (if at all) and it doesn't exist. Ready Steady Go! had the Beatles at least 3 times, all of which are complete and exist.

Here's the earliest Surviving Episode (I believe) of Ready Steady Go (although this has the dance act from the episode cut out): www.youtube.com It later got a whole lot better, but the rest of the "episodes" on youtube are compilations.
