1313695 2012-11-20 23:05:00 Is it possible that the GPS function (if it has one) is switched to on?
If the camera is off, this won't matter so won't be a cause.

1313696 2012-11-20 23:15:00 My now very old Nikon does the same.

But I suspect there's another issue... there's a small internal battery that keeps the clock/calendar in the camera functioning for months without any other batteries in the system.

If this battery gets drained over time, then it has to be recharged - from the batteries you insert. So if the camera gets only rare use, I'd bank on the first set of batteries to get drained fast when recharging the internal clock battery. The second set, once the clock is fully charged should last you a bit longer.

Maybe.

Bit of a curse carrying around 8 AA NiMH batteries just to take a few pics.

1313698 2012-11-20 23:51:00 That's my one and one only reason for not buying a camera with a battery pack. I will only buy ones that use normal batteries, since when I go away I already have a pocket full of AA batteries for my GPS, head torch etc and also my camera.

Same. I won't buy anything that uses proprietary batteries if possible, a few years later and they always end up stupidly expensive to replace if you can even find them.

I agree. I own a Panny TZ20 and it took a while to remember to turn the blaardy thing off. Who wants GPS on a camera anyway? I can look at any of my photos I have taken over the last 20 odd years (1000's) and tell you all about where it was taken, why I was there etc. They are all my creations! :)
