When I find someone who has an interest I share (beer, science fiction books, etc) then we might "geek out" over the shared interest. There's the more traditional usage of (computer) geek, which ... most people would feel pretty comfortable in using. But I'm pretty broad church in my usage. I'd consider anyone who tries to learn any subject to the degree that there's no more to learn a geek of that subject. I have friends who I call "science fiction geeks" and "lego geeks" and "language geeks". I'm thinking I may not be representative in that I see it as a term of my admiration/respect for someone's knowledge to call them a geek. |
