| 1339490 | 2013-05-03 06:18:00 | Just completed setting up a Win7 x64 system and everything runs smoothly untill I installed MSSE - everything just slows to unbearable state. Uninstalled MSSE and the machine runs as expected! What other free alternative is recommended at the moment? Or none at all? |

| 1339492 | 2013-05-03 06:30:00 | Just use windows defender the one it installs. That's what I did with the netbook, since its slow if I install MSE on it too Most of the others are either bloatware / slow, will block something, or will crash. Sooner or later. Just be careful if its online, where you go and what files you download / install. |

This will put a caution flag on the taskbar icon but this can be ignored because all of the AV components will be working apart from auto update. I have used it for 2 years without a problem. |

| 1339494 | 2013-05-03 07:16:00 | Yeah, MSSE seems to me as if its on a downhill slope as far as protection is concerned. I have 2 computers here and MSSE missed 15 trojans, Sureantispyware got them though! Time to pay for some real performance. | PPp (9511) | ||
| 1339495 | 2013-05-03 07:18:00 | Agreed, its horrible when it comes to impacting system performance. Picks up a lot but I personally use NOD32. Its well worth paying for, and its not expensive... | Chilling_Silence (9) | ||
| 1339496 | 2013-05-03 07:23:00 | It was probably doing its initial background system scan, did you have a look at what processes were running while it was going slow and see if it was indeed the cause? Once its done its initial background scan, it settles down and uses very little system resources and only occupies about 45 ~75mb of ram (less than many other AV programmes). I have put it on dozens of computers, I havent noticed it slow down a system abnormally yet like I have with AVG and others. You are also able to go into the settings and lmit the amount of CPU usage during a scan. The plus side of MSE is the high detection rate and its ability to clean and remove infections, the down side is its limited protection features compared with some other Av software. If it was me, I probably wouldnt give up on it so quickly unless you were going to pay for an AV programme. |

MSSE was not to bad when it came out, but as Ppp posted, its missing way to many these days. Had one customer call me back today, she had tried both avast and MSSE, both were having problems with infections. Installed Nod32 a few weeks back, ran several other antimalware programs, one being the NEW Spybot Search and destroy 2, and she was over the moon, with the performance increase. |

I have just disabled MSE on one of my XP machines. For some weeks, it ran like a dog. By this, I mean some programs took over a minute to start. Eventually, I thought of MSE as the possible cause and after disabling it, the speed is back to normal. It was not running the background scan, it was normal operation. I used to use Avast, maybe I should go back to this. This is not the case on my laptop running Vista. I still have MSE running normally on this computer and it is running programs at normal speed. |
