1314537 2012-11-24 10:26:00 Bit of a random one but I am fortunate enough to be travelling to our school leavers ball in a very tidy '67 Rolls convertible coupe. A very nice machine indeed, I could have gone in a stunning Gatsby but it was only two seater so unless I put the missus on the baggage stand we'd be in a pickle  Anyway, the gent who is lending us the said machine said he'd like to be paid in some decent red wine.

Problem is I ain't got a clue about red wine, barely a clue about whites. I was just wondering what you guys prefer when it comes to reds.

For those wondering this is the Rolls, I think the Gatsby may have been sold since it's not listed on TM anymore. A lucky buyer indeed! - www.trademe.co.nz and the Gatsby looked something like this www.seriouswheels.com Interestingly (according to JPR Cars LTD you can still buy Gatsbys for around $30,000 USD, I'm keen! certainly cheaper than those new Ford bodies)

Anyway, cheers on your wine advice!

1314538 2012-11-24 11:34:00 I'd go into Moore Wilson's in Tory Street when they're not busy and ask. PaulD (232)
1314539 2012-11-24 18:06:00 merlot for sure, i would try the winenstore too they will have more idea about what's available now gary67 (56)
1314540 2012-11-24 21:28:00 If he knows you were going to the school leavers' ball then he probably didn't mean a bottle of Coleraine or Grange .

Do you know him well enough to ask what variety he prefers?

My favourite reds are pinot noir, merlot and malbec . Trinity Hill do a good syrah . I know of others who would go for a cabernet sauvignon every time . There are so many blends as well .

Just a hint, but I would prefer having 2 bottles of good wine (and good doesn't always mean expensive, that's just for the wine snobs) than 4 mediocre ones .

ps You can always buy him a gift card for a wine outlet .

I personally like some of the cabernet merlot blends that are starting to get recognition . But it is a matter of personal taste . Why not ask your benefactor what their preference is? They'll have some idea of your personal circumstances and shouldn't reply with something out of your price range .

Or ask what their favourite shop is - the shop may be able to let you know .

If it's Moore Wilson's bond store, give it a miss . If you frequent that, you'd be able to afford to buy that Gatsby . . . Moore Wilsons imported wines and spirits by the pallet load for private buyers . Sometimes the cost went into four figures a single bottle (and that was 15 years ago) .

1314542 2012-11-24 22:00:00 Usually a Pinot noir from Marlborough over $40 will get you something decent. Try emailing Glengarry or Scenic Cellars for a suggestion within your price range. Also the online store sales@blackmarket.co.nz offer some amazing deals, with excellent online service - used them many times. Greg (193)

The range carried by the Wellington Moore Wilson's seems to be aimed at its restaurant customers. The staff at least can tell you what is popular and value for money. I've never heard of them running an import service for private buyers.

This is my bad, but I knew there was a "Wilson" in the name somewhere. It must have been Wilson Neill which of course was struck off in 2002. The place I was thinking of was on the corner of Tory and Lorne in the 90s and at the time a late friend was its regional manager. I was given a tour of the bonded facility by him, and the total CIF value was over $10m.

1314545 2012-11-25 01:35:00 Depends on your taste, personally my favorite red is Mt Difficulty Roaring Meg Pinot Noir. Around the $30 mark at Countdown. Alex B (15479)
1314546 2012-11-25 06:45:00 If the person likes his red meat and winter roasts, then you can't go past a little known Pinot Noir from Otago called Devil's Staircase, not too badly priced (roughly $25 per single bottle) and up there with the best Pinot Noirs from Otago. Air New Zealand stocks this wine for their good customers and is highly praised all over the world - and pinot from Otago is world renown. Sanco (683)
