149256 2003-06-02 10:19:00 Hi there,

Firstly, sorry if this is a repeat question, but I've surfed this site trying to find an answer to my problem, but couldn't find anything specific. Also, excuse my ignorance, as I know very little about networking.

I have an XP Professional PC set up at home, talking on a static ip of 192.168.1.1 to my Linux (RedHat 7.3) server pc, on a static ip of 192.168.1.2 via a direct crossover cable (no hub, etc). I use Jetstream and VPN software to connect to an external network. This has all been working just sweet.

However, the VPN software has changed now to Cisco VPN Client 4.0 (Rel), but the Cisco software is very touchy about the local ip address, and fails to connect if a static ip address is set. I've been on to Cisco and various network people, but no one seems to have an answer for the Cisco problem. A full reinstall of XP has solved the problem, but I'm now unable to connect to my Linux pc. My XP pc thinks it has DHCP enabled at the local pc network level, but of course it's not, and I guess it thinks it's on 127.0.0.1.

So either I need to;
- Find an answer to my Cisco problem. Unlikely, and don't expect a solution for this.
- Install a local DHCP server in my network somewhere, as I don't want to be constrained to being on the Internet to get an ip address.

My Linux server can stay on the static ip address. So either I can setup DHCP on the Linux server, or use some other method within the network.

So, excuse the silly question, but can a router act as a DHCP server, or is there a not-too-expensive piece of hardware I can purchase to manage this for me?

Is it difficult to install and configure a DHCP server on Linux, as I'm no unix expert? And as the DHCP server ip address would be the same ip address as the Linux pc running as a server, is XP able to be configured to not be confused by this?

Can this whole problem be sorted out by running a DHCP server on XP? And can anyone recommend cheap/free software to do this?

Sorry for the novel and all the questions, but thought I'd seek some help here before attemping to stumble thru a solution myself, and possibly risk another XP reinstall (two so far...).

Thanks in advance,
Mike Carroll.

149257 2003-06-03 03:20:00 Either the XP or the Linux can run a DHCP server. Both have the code included. :D Just browse through the "setup" type places in the Network area. The Control Centre area of your Linux will have a section for setting up "services".

How do you connect to jetstream? Is it by a PCI card in the XP box, or is it an external modem/router? (A router will almost certainly have a DHCP server included).

Your XP won't be using 127.0.0.1 if the local network is working ... that address is "localhost/localnet", that is, itself, and it is a loop connection in the software, without using the Ethernet card. It will be using the 198.etc IP address.

149258 2003-06-03 03:51:00 Hi Graham,

I connect to Jetstream from a PCI card in the XP pc. I had a thought about the firewall on the Linux pc, and totally opened that up, but didn't seem to make any difference - still can't connect thru.

Cheers, Mike.
