149771 2003-06-04 09:53:00 I know this has come up before, fairly recently in fact. I need a new player for my downloaded music I am currently using Jet Audio and love its features and sound but it is very hard on my system, that is it hogs ram and seems to slow the whole system down when i have virus scanner and netscape running. I dont like the sound quality of wmp and have never been a fan of winamp,, an anyone suggest a player that might fill the gap?

sys info

win98
300mhz
128 meg ram
I know system is getting old, please dont tell me to upgrade, I would love to but the war office has other ideas!

Thanks
Mike

149774 2003-06-04 10:19:00 WMP 9 Sounds great!!

Try updating to that, otherwise there's Winamp.. but you dont like that..
There's RealOne player.. but Im not a 'Real' fan...
I think NeroMIX Costs.... but that's brill!
There's Soritong Media Player for PC's 300Mhz or under that are 'pushed' to the limits:-)

That's all that comes to mind at the moment.. Id suggest the latest WinAmp 2.91, not WinAmp 3 though :-)

149775 2003-06-04 10:31:00 how about Windows Media Player :) :D, it does a good job. stu140103 (137)
149776 2003-06-04 10:41:00 Yeah.. but WMP is a bit of a hog... unless you're using WMP 6.4 which has no playlist or other 'advanced' features.

To be honest, SoriTong is your best bet.. the main homepage is half Japanese, but the ReadMe and installation...and whole main app is English.

Its very small, when Zipped is only 1.6 MB big...
If you cant find it I'd be happy to upload it to orcon :-)

Cheers

149777 2003-06-04 12:16:00 a thumbs up for foobar here.. once a few new gui's are released for it, it'll really come into its own...

winamp is currently trying too hard to be the next best swiss-army-knife app.. WA3 sucks, period. I want a program with a small footprint to play my mp3's/ogg's and WA2 has always done that. Along comes 3 and its a bigger download, has a lot of features I'll never use, uses twice the resources and feels like beta software.

Foobar on the other hand has an insanely small download/footprint and offers built in kernel streaming sound... quite important if, like me, you prefer sound over bloat/flashing lights

149778 2003-06-04 12:27:00 Very nicely said about WinAmp... Totally agree! Chilling_Silently (228)
149779 2003-06-04 12:44:00 FooBar2000 (http://foobar2000.hydrogenaudio.org) here as well. -=JM=- (16)
149780 2003-06-04 12:59:00 Winamp has always done it for me - why not install an older version. I currently use ver 3, which opens up really quickly on my P31000 - but I found the older versions worked great on my old P2350. It's also got a range of skins that make it more of a pleasure to operate once you've found one you like.

I don't know about other players, but Winamp has the delightful feature of blending successive songs absolutely seamlessly.

Suggest stay away from any Real player version.

The system hog thing would be eradicated if you spent a tiny amount on a new sound card - even an "old" Creative Soundblaster - 2nd hand they're almost being given away
