2003-06-04 02:31:00 | I have my AVG anti-virus software set up to update automatically every morning. It usually takes five or 10 minutes, but this morning it took so long I had to leave it running when I went out. This afternoon I got an email about the Sobig virus from Symantec and thought "what the heck, I'll try an update to ensure it's all ok". Wrong! AVG immediately started yet another update. This time it only took a few minutes but it made me wonder how comprehensive their updates are if I'd done one only hours earlier and another one was required the same day. Am I being paranoid or is this pretty standard? If so, how often should I be updating - more than once a day? | write-click (2248) | |
2003-06-04 02:51:00 | probally a patch for a patch ;) serious note dont worry, I have my antivirus (norton antivirus 2003) to auto update when im on the net. it updates about every 3 - 2 days

2003-06-04 03:06:00 | I am often not on the net when it is set to update (sometimes I don't get online until after lunch, other times not at all), so I occasionally update manually. I much preferred the Nortons one for ease of updating, but at least this one is free! I had thought possibly AVG had updated since the alert came out from Symantec, but considering there can be days when no updates are required, I did think it was a little odd. | write-click (2248) | |
2003-06-04 03:12:00 | Check your update settings, it may be set to update the database if older than 14 days, it should be set to 1 day! Update works fine for me, I have about 7 PC's in the CyberCafe, and once every blue moon, say, 20 days, I'll check that they've been updated and do a manual update. It's never been out of date :-)

2003-06-04 03:17:00 | Untick the option "User Confirms Dial-Up Connection" if you want it to auto-connect for you :-) ...Then there's just getting it disconnected, as I am not sure if it auto-disconnects itself :-)

2003-06-04 03:22:00 | Nope, I've got it set to update if database is older than one day, and to repeat every day if unsuccessful. I worry about the auto connect - I don't always want the computer on, particularly if I am away - and like the response below yours, I wonder if it auto-disconnects too? | write-click (2248) | |
2003-06-04 05:15:00 | What happens is it only downloads one update at a time. You get the same thing if you install an old copy and run the update. I had to run it ~10 times IIRC.

2003-06-04 06:38:00 | Not here? I have one from back when BugBear was first circulating... only two downloads to get it up to date.. I think its something like a fornightly larger one.. then a weekly incremental or something?? | Chilling_Silently (228) | |
2003-06-04 06:38:00 | Hi write-click, Since when has Symantec been sending out E-mails about viruses? More likely someone sent you a virus?(Please correct me if I'm wrong!) This afternoon > I got an email about the Sobig virus from Symantec > and thought "what the heck, > often should I be updating - more than once a day? Grisoft's,AVG updates of virus defs are usually 7-10 days apart, but on odd ocassions you might get them every other day for a week, then miss 10 days! I usually post when there are new defs as I am notified when Grisoft put them on their Web-page! Symantec on the otherhand updates several times a week but unless these def files are in their weekly "Live Update", the files are untested and could be a waste of time downloading them? I download updates manually just to keep the above apps up to date as they are not "running"on my computer, but handy as a backup to the virus scanner I am currently testing! Cheer,Kiwitas,;-)
