149558 2003-06-04 10:34:00 if it happens right after the bootup mem check, then it's definetely a BIOS password. somebody (208)
149559 2003-06-04 10:49:00 if you set the BIOS to boot for floppy first??

can you boot the system with the drive installed but not set in the BIOS?

149560 2003-06-04 12:21:00 He is not the problem it is the security that is giving you problems. You need to learn how to disable the security. mikebartnz (21)
149561 2003-06-04 20:29:00 What happens when I turn on the computer is it does the mem check then straight away says "Built-in HDD Password :" It does not get any further in to let me enter bios as usual with the last drive I had in there.
The faulty hdd installed lets me into bios still but as soon as I switched drives it gives me the built-in password prompt. Tis a bit of a conundrum. :|

149563 2003-06-04 22:29:00 I think I Have some bad news for you :(

I used to service Acer laptops and there was an option in the BIOS to put a HDD password on.
This is an added security feature that stopped people from just removing the HDD and putting it in another laptop/PC to read the data. The password is actually written into the HDD BIOS/Firmware.
I was told by Acer to be very careful of this password because if you forget it the only way to remove it is to send the HDD back to the manufacturer!

149564 2003-06-05 05:33:00 Thanks for all your help and ideas. I think I am going to have to purchase another one. Ta anyways folks. ;) Icarus (3936)
149565 2003-06-05 07:32:00 Very interesting CyaBro.

Icarus, ask for a refund from the person you bought it off on trademe. Threaten to put bad feedback on and say you will contact trademe to get his account removed etc.

Its not fair that he should sell you a hard drive you can't even use.

Either that or you can send the hdd back to the manufacturer and get it fixed :)

149566 2003-06-05 09:13:00 Have just got off the phone from IBM and they tell me that there is absolutley no way around it. If they receive one back from someone who has forgotten their password, they just replace it. Bah humbug.
Thanx anyways chaps

149567 2003-06-05 09:19:00 where in NZ are you??

I might take the drive off your hands for a few dollers....

I still think my little program might fix it :-)
