| 149480 | 2003-06-04 03:40:00 | True lohsing, Although this particular seagate is atleast a few years old, which makes it somewhat more forgivable. It also explains why i've had a complete ***** of a time setting the machine up with various things not working and/or unexplicably needing to be reinstalled once i set the next thing up. I almost pulled my hair out, but atleast now things make sense. Grumble grumble... This was a reformat/reinstall job, so at least there is a copy sitting in the HDD of Sam. In agents case, i just hope that you can copy its contents before it fails completely. .Chris |

I assumed that a different brand would be purchased (unless Agent was planning on getting into hair-shirts and self-mutilation) so he does the data transfer then takes the dud back to the supplier for a credit . Given the experience he has had, he is quite entitled to ask for a refund . It is no skin off the suppliers' nose, though they do lose the profit from the original sale . | 149483 | 2003-06-04 06:03:00 | Oh yup. Thank you so much for the offer, Lohsing. I'll take it up. Just wondering if you've got Norton Ghost or similar, or if I just copy my HDD (or as much as I can - depends on whether the bad sector is gone or what) over. I don't mind, it's just Ghosting is so much easier. Please email me at "sulfwin [at] [disposable domain aka 'hotmail'] [dot] com" with some more detailed info (or is it "more details"?). Got that? Hope it wasn't confusing... :D I'll just have to collate with my dad etc, because I am frankly not sure whether it is a bad sector or if my HDD is going to fail. Couldn't reply because of school. Chris> that's exactly the error I got! Just not the HDD model numbers. Dylan (or whoever it was)> yup. Seagate Barracuda IV 40GB (but really 37.8GB) 7200 RPM drive. Model number is something like ST4... can't remember exactly. I always trusted Seagate. They're one of the companys I have an inexplicable liking for. Eg, I like Intel over AMD. Seagate over Maxtor. ATI over nVidia. Asus over Gigabyte. I will use the less-favoured companies products, but I would prefer the favoured ones for some weird reason. |

| 149484 | 2003-06-04 06:10:00 | Every failed HDD i have ever had contact with has been a seagate, however it seems only fair to point out that every HDD in my network is a seagate, and most machines that i fix have seagates in them. Therefore the odds are that seagate is what i will see fail the most. I wonder if anyone has put together a resonably balanced independant study of the life expectancy of various drive brands???? .Chris |

| 149485 | 2003-06-04 06:21:00 | Perhaps it should feature in an upcoming PC World magazine :D And if not, I suppose PC Authority, what with their good "Labs" section, could do it. |
