150093 2003-06-05 13:59:00 Sometimes my session with my ISP is good-excellent; and I can surf for hours uninterrupted. But lately I have found that pages load very slowly, then don't load, then I get disconnected.

I rang my ISP and they said it was a fault with my registry, and I would have to re-install my Operating System.

I used the PING and TRACERT utilities to get t o my ISP's main IP-address (e.g. using PING www.?????.co.nz) , with differing results. Sometimes perfect - sometimes patchy - sometimes nothing.

I am running Win 98; and I have had very little trouble up until the last week or so. I am slightly computer literate, and fail to see how my registry will stop PING and TRACERT from getting results from my ISP 's IP-address.

cheers
Brian.

150094 2003-06-05 19:55:00 Does not answer your problem but Reinstalling your OS, it's your phone line, etc are some common answers given by some otherwise bored or unhelpful help desk staff. Very few ISP's will admit to having problems. Gordon. (2217)
150095 2003-06-05 23:02:00 thanks - but would the phone lines (not maintained by my ISP) keep disconnecting me, and dropping data, or would it point to my ISP's Routers, switches, etc.

Is their any definitive test that could prove one way or another ??

cheers
Brian

150096 2003-06-05 23:22:00 U could try a program that may help u
Its found here
download.com.com
Its a stay connected program.
Maybe you should try a different phone line.Is there a lot of phone lines plugged into one phone wall plug?if so.Try taking it out and see what happens.
I reckon u should format and install your operating system .
Which isp are u susing?

150097 2003-06-05 23:49:00 First thing i would do is ring telecom and get them to test the line.

I argued for months with ezysurf and then ihug over the service i was getting from them, they both insisted it was at my end,i changed to xtra(which hurt me deeply) and i now have a more consistent service then ive experienced before....well as far as nz goes anyway.

meh,the amount of times ive wanted to return to Aussie just to get my cable back............

150098 2003-06-06 03:58:00 We only have twophones - and one is a fax/phone; the lines seem to be clear but I cannot speak for the quality of the lines between my exchange and my ISP.

I do not want to name them, I don't want to be unduly unfair to them as it may yet not be their fault.

I am also trying my best to get away from reformatting or reinstalling - this problem has only arisen in the last few days, which I think points to a router/switching problem rather tha the easy way out - blame the users computer.

thanks for your suggestion of the software - I will look into it

cheers

150099 2003-06-06 03:59:00 I will look into having the lines checked - and yes I would LOVE some form of digital / cable service here in the wop-wops.

cheers

150100 2003-06-06 07:16:00 This is usually phone line or modem related.

First thing to do is disconnect all phones, faxes etc from the line and connect and see if there is any improvement.

Remove all double adapters and extension leads and connect direct into the wall jack.

Any sort of noise or interference on the phone line can disrupt the modem.
Electric fences are a common problem in rural areas.

If you have sky digital remove the phone lead from the decoder.

If you have an internal modem such as Conexant or other software based modem it may be connecting too fast for the line conditions.
Slower connections can sometimes result in faster downloads as the modem is more stable.
Try slowing it down with extra settings. What you add to the extra settings depends on your modem model.

150101 2003-06-06 09:23:00 Who is your ISP?

Paradise have been disconnecting me quite a bit recently. It seems to come and go.

150102 2003-06-06 11:10:00 To Jim B:

I followed my ISP's instructions - set the dial-up speed to 57,600 and added the line "AT&F" to the settings - not near any electric fences, don't have sky (don't want it either) only 2 phones in the house - seems ok most times.

To bmason:

Yes, you guessed it - do you live in Central North Island around P.North to Wanganui way ?

cheers guys
