149863 2003-06-04 23:23:00 I note a posting back in Feb 03. It was suggested that a package could be obtained from Craig at Club Manager Ltd. Yes but the problem is that most small clubs exist on the smell of an oily rag. This software costs $1000-$1500 and is out of reach for most.
Does anyone have any suggestions for good free or low cost software which would provide a database for membership as well as financial recordsand the ability to sort information. I am told that Excell will not do it.
This must be a common enough need yet there doesn't seem to be any well known answer.
Help.

Have you tried the Symantec ACT! software? A single user is only a couple of hundred (perhaps around $300?) You can create new fields to enter information if you wanted to have some basic financial information in there. It's more a CRM package rather than an accounting package though.

Otherwise, there is always MYOB which is pretty good. DSE are advertising it at $395. Of course it's more geared to accouting rather than customer/member management.

As far as cheap/free stuff goes, you probably won't find much that is any good. In other words, you get what you pay for. Sorry if this hasn't been much help.

149865 2003-06-04 23:47:00 Depends on what is required.

any database, or
any spreadsheet, or
pencil and paper

depends on needs.

If you want quality, don't pay with peanuts.

149866 2003-06-05 02:29:00 Thankyou Honeylaser and Merlin. I agree that you get what you pay for and I have no criticism of anyone wanting to be paid for their product - including Microsoft which it is fashionable to bag.
It seems to me that there must be existing, even old software that would do what a club needed without the bells and whistles of the bigger commercial programs.
I will check out your suggestions even if I end up paying for it myself.
Cheers

149867 2003-06-05 05:01:00 Have a look at OpenOffice.org (www.openoffice.org) for a free modern suite. It's available for Windows, Mac, Linux ... Graham L (2)

149870 2003-06-05 08:27:00 I'm not sure if this is any good, but it looks like it might be what you're after. It's shareware so you can try before you buy :)
