149809 2003-06-04 12:39:00 Hi guys

New to the board, so I'll say hi. First things first, my specs:

CPU: Duron 1.3GHz
RAM: 512MB
Operating System: XP Pro
Direct X: 9.0
3D Card: Nvidia GF4 MX440
AGP Mode: 4x
3D Driver Version: 44.03

Game: Homeworld

Problem: The game plays like a slideshow. I've played it on my computer before, but it has always run smoothly. The specs of my comp when it did work was: 700MHz, DX8.1, Nvidia TNT2. I have no idea why. All other 3D games run perfectly. I've used software mode, and D3D mode, and both are slideshow effects. Has this happened to anybody else, and if so, what was the solution?

Thanks for any help you can give.

149810 2003-06-04 13:39:00 I know Homeworld is very demanding system wise... so you should check the graphics card settings... are all the anti-aliasing, etc turned off? You should perhaps stick to best performance, as opposed to best quality...

How about playing in 16bit as opposed to 32bit colour? Even changing resolution down a notch to 800 X 600 will help that graphics card of your's...

Lo.

149811 2003-06-04 14:11:00 Have you re-installed your Detonators since changing Graphics cards?
It may be a good idea to reinstall those, and make sure you have the latest Direct X 9!

149812 2003-06-04 14:38:00 Just like to say thanks guys for the speedy responses.

To answer a couple of points:

Running the game at 800x600 @16bit by default. AA is set to 'game controlled'.

In-between the TNT2 and GF4 swap, the Detonator drivers have been updated to the latest. [44.03] XP specific. Not uninstalled between the swaps, just updated. XP detected the change from TNT2 to GF4 automatically.

Going to try the new DirectX 9.0a. I'm not keeping my hopes up on this part.

I'm going to start the Dx9.0a download and installation, and get back to you guys about the results. Funny thing is while playing the game, the mouse cursor works perfectly, and the camera movement is very smooth, it is the in-game ships, asteroids, etc that are doing the slideshow effect.

Once again, thanks for the speedy responces. Talk again soon.

149813 2003-06-04 14:55:00 Well, it is a good idea to actually Un-Install rather than update them...

But your best bet now is with Dx 9 :-)

149815 2003-06-04 16:34:00 Im still gonna roll with the idea of setting a System Restore Point, Un-Installing the Detonators fully, then re-installing the latest ones.... Anybody else think otherwise?

Performance should be better on a GF4 over your TNT 2, not worse.. and the only other thing that's changed would be drivers...

After you've done that, and if things are still not peachy, try re-installing the game over top of itself and see what effect that has, it may make a difference :-)

Hope this helps.. Im off to sleep now.. I cant even see my monitor clearly, so I apologise iffff Ive made any spelling mistakes.

Cheers

149816 2003-06-04 20:35:00 Just a shot in the dark but have you tried to change the compatibilty option in xp? The game was made prior to xp's exsistence so maybe changing the compatbilty setting to win98/me might work? Icarus (3936)
149817 2003-06-05 11:31:00 Thanks Icarus for the hint,

Unfortunately it didn't fix the problem.

I don't know what to do short of reformatting the C drive and installing everything from the beginning.

Any hints from others would be greatly appreciated

149818 2003-06-05 14:48:00 Try uninstalling the game, rebooting, then reinstalling the game. Or have you tried this?
What else is running in the back ground? Home world is an older game that should run well on those specs.
