For Win 95 98 ME Double-click on My Computer, then double-click on Dial-Up Networking. Right-click on the ISP connection icon and choose Properties. What is in the box "connect using" For Win XP Start/ control panels/ phone and modem options Click on Modem tab, what modem is showing installed. |

| 150106 | 2003-06-06 11:39:00 | You can only make the modem more stable by connecting at a slower speed. AT&F only sets the modem back to default settings and will be doing nothing to help. Do the following and if the disconnects stop and downloads are more consistant then this will confirm it is a modem phone line. After confirming this it may be possible to increase the speed with adjustments to the setting and still avoid the disconnects. Double-click on My Computer, then double-click on Dial-Up Networking. Right-click on the ISP connection icon and choose Properties. Click the Configure button. Change maximum speed to 38.400 Click the Connection tab. Click the Advanced button. In "Extra settings," enter the string. +MS=V34 Click OK to save changes. Shut down the computer and restart to activate the changes. |

| 150109 | 2003-06-06 12:01:00 | That extra setting gives a connect speed of 33k but you might find you will be downloading faster then you were before and prevent the disconnects. The max speed setting is the modem to port speed and does not affect the speed your modem connects at but is best set at 38400 with that particular extra setting.. |

| 150111 | 2003-06-07 00:12:00 | YOU-REEK-A well, sort of - the first time I tried it I got the "BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH" nad had to restart [hey it's good enough for bill gates] but afyter that the connection seems fine (although it was an intermittent fault anyway). But the noticable thing is - that with the slower setting, there is no discernable slowdown in my computers activity - in fact I would be confident to say that there is no difference at all. The ISP said that I had to use the 57,600 setting to synchronise with their equipment, obviously a slower setting than that is not a probnlem. thanks Jim |

| 150112 | 2003-06-07 01:04:00 | The reason you do not notice any difference is because even though you were showing an initial faster connection previously your modem would have been down training to try and maintain a connection speed the phone lines could maintain and the end result would have been quite a slow download time with pausing and disconnects eventually. With the slower connection speed your modem will maintain a more constant download rate and and hopefully prevent the disconnects. If you still have trouble then it is likely to be phone line and you should get Telecom to do a line check. If the line check is OK then it will be probably be ISP related, possibly bandwidth congestion or similar You can confirm this easily enough by signing up to another ISP for a month to get a comparison. |
