150359 2003-06-07 06:28:00 If its all done at the exchange...how is it that we log in through our ISP and only get 128k, but when we log in through jetstreamgames then we get full speed? Hence I'm more inclined to believe the speed is limited by the ISP.

And agent, your right about that mobile phone rubbish. However you could always plug your phone into your laptop/pc and get the good speed internet that way (but your paying the earth for it).

Why do we need to send pics through a mobile? Its silly, but its the first step towards video mobile phone (the ultimate and probably most useful thing your phone will ever do). What I mean by this is, instead of only hearing voice, you can see them talking as well. Already there are phones in america that use video talking on their phones (They are the size of PDA's) but they are just not available here yet.

Playing games on your mobile is a waste of time- agreed. And WAP is worthless anyway. I know telecom had free WAP all of Queen's birthday weekend. And guess what: Never once could I log into the service, even at 3am in the morning. It was all a stupid scam. On tuesday I could get back on, although it wasn't free anymore. What does that tell you?

I think we will see a speed upgrade for jetstart as soon as xbox live arrives, whenever the heck that is. A year away is too long. I think southland will be getting cheap wireless internet in the next year or so anyway, so whatever is cheaper, I will go for! :)

150361 2003-06-07 06:40:00 I have the absurd idea that they limit your bandwidth, despite the fact that they could expand it to the maximum for everyone.

But then again, at ICE they had 8MB/s Jetstream - don't ask me why, because that's bloody false advertising. The average Jetstream customer will only ever get speeds of 2MB/s - and that's burst speed.

150362 2003-06-07 06:46:00 I'm intrigued by the statement:
"New Zealand's broadband market is third world, compared to that of the UK and USA."
This sort of un-substantiated gripe just sounds like the old "beatup on Telecom because they are big" crap.
If you check the stats, NZ broadband is more widely available and lower priced than many countries, including both the UK and USA. Oddities like South Korea have to be ignored because their government has virtually forced broadband into every building, and at the same time made sure that the price of dial-up ("free" here) is exhorbitant.
Most complaints I have heard about JetStream refer to JetStream Starter, and are variations on "why can't I have unlimited downloads for free". This was in fact the idea behind the original uncapped JetStart, which was instead nobbled speed-wise on the basis that no-one would be dumb enough to download continuously at around 1.2 GBytes/day. ISPs pay for volume on their incoming links from the internet, and would lose heavily on anyone using anywhere near the above level. Unfortunately, some users took it upon themselves to do just that and effectively killed it for everyone. The reaction from ISPs was inevitable - either impose a cap (eg 5MB in Xtra's case) or put up the price (eg Actrix's $179.90/month unlimited JetStart).
Of couse, once a cap is imposed, the need for speed limiting disappears. This is why there is only a $5/month difference between Jetstream Starter and JetStream Home 500, which is full speed. So an incease, or even removal, of the rate limiting on jetStream starter could easily be introduced. just don't expect to get twice as much total data for the same price.
As someone who mainly surfs, with occasional file downloading, I find Home 500 to be great - it is worlds better than dialup, and I haven't paid for a single excess MB yet. But then again, my old fart's brain suggests to me that there is little need for gigabytes/month unless you are into dubiously legal activities anyway.
having got that off my chest, I agree with Agent's comments about email on mobile phones; this seems to be more of a gimmick than a useful feature. But then again, I tend to think the same about SMS ...

Depends on how close to the exchange you are :-)

150364 2003-06-07 07:21:00 LOl listen to you people.....so what.....they havent unbundled the local loop......pffffffft.......business is business. Now why isnt anyone talking about BCL?

Jetstart is the bargain ADSL setup, Ive got a 10 Gb cap thro world-net and I wouldnt need it to be any faster than it is. Be greatful.

No, Im certainly not going to be complaining when I get it, but if there's the possibility of the speed being increased, then that'd be awesome!

In the mean time, I emailed a contact who was looking into getting me a job a while back, and Ive asked if he might be able to shed some light on the subject.

Xtra dont control the speed of the JetStart connection. Telecom do! If it goes up for Xtra then it will go up for the rest that also use JetStream as it is all the same service just different ISP's using it.

150368 2003-06-07 11:49:00 you may be confusing connection speeds with download speeds. Two totally different things. Also to Powa, unfortunately it is Telecom that restricts the speed. It is done software wise on a port by port basis in the exchange.
