150953 2003-06-08 11:07:00 I know its a bit of an open question, but I need to get an ISP.

I am looking at a dial up, but I have no idea what sort of monthly usage I'll have, as I have been at university for the last 2 years, (sob, no more free high speed internet access)

I am in the Chch region.

Any suggestions or opinions greatly appreciated.

150954 2003-06-08 11:13:00 i hate to say it,it pains me deeply,im scarred for life, but out of the isp's ive used only xtra have given me a consistent feed.

Dunno about the help desk side of things, ive never rung em.....having said that ive only ever rung any help desk to tell them how much thier service/product sucks.

Dont use xtra if you go with Jetslowerthentheinternationalbroadbandstandardther eforenottechnicallybroadband

150955 2003-06-08 22:20:00 Thanks for that.

I would also be a bit reluctant to use xtra, but if it is the best option......

Anyone else got any suggestions?

150956 2003-06-08 22:31:00 Im using paradise dial up and there quite good. Its 250 hours for 20 dollars per month.
Net is always fast.no problems.Nope.However they don't have email attachment scanning like xtra. That means you will have to scan the attachments yourself.!! I caught a virus using my paradise email.
i deleted it using norton anti virus.!
Overall paradise is a good isp.
I wouldn't go for xtra.
If u know what xtra has recently made.I don't really think u will like it.

150957 2003-06-08 22:32:00 Xtra would have to be at the bottom of the list surely??
Have a look at www.consumer.org.nz
They have a good isp finder service
Also www.netguide.co.nz have a list of isp´s
Good luck

150958 2003-06-08 22:33:00 i've rung the paradise help desk. Its a free number.I had a problem connecting. They got me through in 5 mins the most.I had about 4 troubles in the past.Minor troubles. And they are always there to listen to my voice. What so fascinating is everytime i call and being put on hold.Beauty and the beast music would be playing at the back ground.lol:O yingxuan (3330)
150959 2003-06-08 22:36:00 The problems with isp and why i chose paradise was that otehr isp doesn't offer direct debit. Most of them are all credit card payment.GRRR yingxuan (3330)
150960 2003-06-08 23:00:00 Anyone tried Kwik net?

Are they any good? Their prices look OK.

150961 2003-06-09 00:32:00 Hi there, we're in the Horowhenua/manawatu area and have been with Paradise since day one. Never any problems at all, and when we have purchased new computers for different rooms they are very helpful and patient with setting up. $20 for 250 hours,or $15 for 150, plus you can view your time right down to each day if you wish.
Personally I wouldn't use xtra, I have three mates who were totally dicked around by them and are now Paradise customers with no complaints. They have credit card plus direct debit options.
MTCW, but hopefully it helps...

150962 2003-06-09 01:10:00 This is getting a bit off topic, but it is an advantage having Xtra if you have a 027 Mobile thats got WAP ability - you can check your (Xtra) email through your phone, and send emails to any address too . (the recipient doesn't have to have an xtra email adress)

But, I have never used Xtra, so I can't say if it is an good ISP or not . I use our local ISP, and I'm satisfied with it - $25 for unlimited hours per month, though it can be a bit of a pain having only 56k modem, when trying to watch videos on the net etc or waiting for a flash animation to load .

I think that my family is looking at upgrading to Jetstream, when it goes Wireless (in August or so, according to a relative working at Telecom) - apparently we are outside the fibreoptics cables (or whatever it is called) range, damn! Was looking forward to getting high speed internet .

Good luck with finding a ISP :)
