150824 2003-06-08 05:24:00 Hi,

I have a couple of pages on my Website I protected with a
password .

I have forgotten how i did it! It may have been with some
. htaccess file? In one case i have forgotten the passwords .

I cant seem to find the files with the usernames or passwords on
my own HD or on the ISP's side .

The main thing is that now I'd like to set up another such page .

Any help appreciated .

Welcome to Press F1 :)

Lets see what other ideas people have before I put my suggestion up :D

150826 2003-06-08 06:03:00 I've heard of something called a .htpassword file.... not too sure about it though. somebody (208)
150827 2003-06-08 06:40:00 Depending on your webserver depends on how you do it.
You could do dynamic webpage password protection which is where the user inputs their details into a HTML form and clicks submit where it is verified against a database of sorts - an example of this is Hotmail's login, or the login to PressF1. This requires a server which supports either ASP or PHP and scripts for them - there are plenty of freebies on www.hotscripts.com. If your webhost does not allow you to use PHP or ASP scripts, then you can either get a free ASP webserver (plenty of good ones available), or use something like http://www.hostedscripts.com who will provide you with the login script, database and connectivity, and you just need to enter usernames and passwords.

Otherwise, you could use .htaccess within Apache or other like webservers (Xitimi ( This is where your Internet Browser pops up a login box and asks for a username and password which is verified against a text (like) file. An example of this is http://www.st-peters.school.nz/sysstat/html/AdminServer.backup.html" target="_blank">www.xitami.com) is a good free one). This is where your Internet Browser pops up a login box and asks for a username and password which is verified against a text (like) file. An example of this is http:)

150828 2003-06-08 07:13:00 Thanks - CyberChuK - I am sure i used the .htaccess method - and as I just need to be able to send one user name and one password to several people it seems very simple. I have an I hug account and no access to the script files.

Here is the one I already have - and trying to do something similar to:

www.psybernet.co.nz

But nowhere on my system or on Ihug can I spot the .htaccess file or the associated? password files - Yet the system works. Note my circle directory has a sub-directory called Passwords.

Did I do some sord of chmod thing? If so i don't recall at all how to access my Ihug Homepages account to do that.

Thanks

150830 2003-06-08 07:38:00 Many years ago I had a secure homepgae with Ibug, and they use http authentication to secure pages, which is far more effective than say Java password protect. It's done as you suggest, using .htaccess and .htpasswd files. Their instructions are at:

www.ihug.co.nz

(I assume from your posts that it's your Ibug site you want to do this with. if not, you'll need to get more info from the server host, as the scripts can be subtly different depending how they configure their authentication protocols).

You can view the folders by making them visible, using -al in FTP, but of course the contents will be encrypted

150832 2003-06-08 08:07:00 there is a simple but not so secure way of doing this using java script the password is not visible using view source option either but it is not entirely secure what basically happens is you click a hidden link and you are prompted for a password which is actually the name of the hmtl page you wish to go to heres an example with the script
javascript.internet.com
or
javascriptkit.com
you may have to edit these scipts so that they do what you what but hey isnt that half the fun
be sure to check copyright on these scripts before using, don't what any trouble

That seemed quite good. Have a read.

Uses a .htaccess and a .htpassword file
