Dell logo with Optiplex G1 450L+ and underneath is Bios Revisision AO9.
You can doing nothing with the computer it just freezes on the logo
Where do i go from here other than the computer repair shop.i would like to have a go myself and see if i can get it going.

150792 2003-06-08 02:46:00 Hi Alan

What OS are you running. What were the 2 comps you put together, some specs' type of ram, video, HDD, chipsets, cpu's, mobo's, etc.

Did you update the bios before you rebuilt or download an update and flash utility. Is all the hardware you added to the comp (based on the motherboard and work up from there) compatable with the chipset and bios revision?

150793 2003-06-08 03:47:00 the OS on one i am pulling apart was 98se,the one i am rebuilding has a Dell Slot-1 Motherboard Intel 440BX AGP Chipset.Putting in pc10064mbsimm ram,6gb harddrive,450 Cpu.
Could you please tell me how update the bios, and also how do you use a flash utility.
All the hardware should be compatable to the comp.
As i am very green to this.i hope this helps.
Thanks

150794 2003-06-08 04:08:00 Don't flash the BIOS. If it will work at all it will work now. It's unlikely that you need an upgraded BIOS. Don't try too much at one time. Unplug most things. Leave the video card, the memory, keyboard, and mouse (and the CPU :D).

Power it up and you should get the BIOS. Use the setup to check that you have the right amount of memory.

Turn it off and add the floppy and hard drive. If you have W98SE on the hard disk, use F8 and boot to DOS. The Windows will be a bit fragile if you try to run it on new hardware, with everything different. :D If there is a directory on the disk containing the installation .CAB files, use that for a reinstallation. Then add the CD drive.

150795 2003-06-08 04:26:00 Hi Alan

can you get into the bios? usually press Delete when the very first (POST) screen shows up . Is the comp POSTing (Power On Self Test) and what beeaps do you hear, describe what you hear . Should be one beap .

If you can get into the bios scroll around using your arrow keys, enter to select . Might be best to just let us know if you can get in then escape out by hitting ESC and say no to saving chages or exit without saving (y/n) .

Go to the motherboard manufacturers web site and do a search for the board . Exact board revision and chipset would be helpfull, look in your manual or on the board itself (more accurate) often between the pci slots there will be a number printed on the PCB something like for eg, Asus 440BX rev 1 . 0 . 2 (not necessarily the chipset # tho) .

Once you have found it do a read up of any FAQ's and troubleshooting, etc . Look at the spec (if you don't have the manual) for compatable ram, cpu's, etc . Look for driver updates for the board/chipset/sound/vga/ide (may direct you to intel site) and bios updates . Should be a FAQ on updating the bios which is usually a . bin file . Flash exe is used to do the actual flashing/upgrading of the bios and you should NOT do it if its NOT NECESSARY .

Post back .

150796 2003-06-08 06:41:00 Hi graham L and Murray P

It is just the same with only the memory, keyboard, and mouse and the CPU running.
It I take the memory card out of the slot closest to the power pack and put it in the slot nearer the cpu it opens the same except the progress bar between Optiplex G1 450L+ and underneath is Bios Revisision AO9,goes about a third of the way, then the logo flickers, then starts all over again then just keeps repeating itself. Press F2=setup flashes in the top right hand corner also. When you press F2 it nothing happens
I cant get into the bois in fact i cant get anywhere and with the memery in the slot closest to the CPU,there is no beeps at all, with it in the other slot sometimes there is 3 beeps.
I will go to the motherboard manufacturers web site and see what i can find.
i will report back when i find a solution, probably after next week end if i get time.
Thanks to all for your time, much appreciated

150799 2003-06-10 04:05:00 I put in another 64 meb of ram, making 128 total and away she went.Either the original ram is faulty or it needed 128mb to boot it

Thanks all

150800 2003-06-10 05:21:00 It shouldn't need 128MB to run into the BIOS POST. :D I wonder if the memery was in the wrong slot, so wasn't being detected? Graham L (2)
