151080 2003-06-08 23:49:00 Hi all
I have a Compaq Deskpro EP that i bought second hand .
It's currently running a slot 1 celeron 400 and i'm sure the chipset is an intel 440LX.
What is the fastest pentium 2 processer i can run in this machine?
cheers

Warren

151081 2003-06-09 00:09:00 Would need more information on the board itself, manufacture, model... etc.

Any reason why the increase in processor speed? Possibly replacing it with a slot P3 instead of the celery stick would give it better performance.

Increasing RAM might improve it more too.

151082 2003-06-09 01:51:00 Not sure on the board info
but it's the standard board that Compaq put in their EP deskpro
I might load sisoft sandra to get all the right info and get back to ya

151083 2003-06-09 05:10:00 Hi ya Kame
Right
It's a compaq deskpro ep
Motherboard is a compaq 046ch
Chipset is 440LX

Already got 192 megs of ram and might go to a max of 256
What i want is to get the max performance out of this machine
I guess i'm a bit of a tinkerer
According to sisoft sandra i can go as high as a 533mhz
Not too sure ....want some good advise
Cheers

151084 2003-06-09 06:42:00 this is one of the rare cases where useing a celeron is best. the fsb of the 440lx is 66mhz so you won't be able to use a p2 as it has a 100mhz fsb.

however please check that your motherboard has the required voltages for the later cpu's and that there is bios that supports them (which may be a big problem with a compaq).

151085 2003-06-09 10:44:00 Hmmm
thanks tweak'e
Bugger !!!
I think it might take a 500 celeron but i don't think it will be much of a power boost
It might be better just to max out my ram at 256 megs
any other suggestions ?

Cheers

151086 2003-06-09 11:05:00 256 meg of ram will be nice (i don't know how many ram slots it has but you will most likly need double sided ram to be able to max it out)

also fine tuning the OS and other programs can gain a fair amount of speed. otherwise upgrade the motherboard, ram, cpu, psu, case etc ;-)
