The AMR is a "soft" modem - the modem signal processing is carried out by the system processor. PCI modems are "hardware" based and do their own processing. One way to find out if you would be better off with a PCI modem is to try it.

150994 2003-06-09 06:50:00 Amr are totally software. half of the modem is on the motherboard or built into the motherboard chipset. its cheap and fairly nasty. if you have good phone lines and are not running much background apps it will be "ok". a pci modem is often better, however most are also a "soft modem" or a "semi-soft modem". very rarely will you find a true hardware pci modem.

if an AMR modem works ok then theres not much point changing it.

I'd be interested in knowing why Conexant is a bad brand. I've used several of their internal ADSL modems (Yes, I know you aren't talking about ADSL modems) and I certainly haven't had any problems with them.

150996 2003-06-10 06:19:00 The only complaint I have with them is that they are a pain-in-the-ass to install drivers for. Once in, have had no problems with them. Pheonix (280)
150997 2003-06-10 13:15:00 Conexant modems are horrible because they don't work in linux (winmodems), they cause disconnects and other stupid behaviour, are unreliable, in XP you can't shut the sound off from the internal speaker, whats the official conexant homepage?, bad tech support if any, oh the list goes on! 150998 2003-06-10 14:00:00 while i would agree that Conexant can be a pain, most problems are driver related(i think there are 2 parts to the drivers that need to be installed)bad documentation and the sheer number of different models/drivers out there, the fact that they are a win modem isnt such a bad thing,i cant imagine that modern cpu's are bothered much by the extra workload of a winmodem.

although, that extra ms of lag will get you killed in online games,it doesn't hurt the speed of surfin and downloading....and if you want to play online games then even a 300 dollar us robitcs modem aint gonna cure the dial up blues.

i have been using a lucent winmodem for about 4 years now,ive dragged its sorry arse thru many an upgrade and i wont be replacing her till she dies, even then i might have her stuffed and mounted over the fireplace...........

www.linuxant.com These drivers work fine in the dialup modems under Linux. They are also one of the only companies the offers Linux drivers for their internal ADSL modems. I can't say I've ever needed tech support for a modem.

151001 2003-06-11 05:10:00 Fact is linux just doesn't support winmodems. There may be drivers out there for conexant modems.

There was for the one I had, but it was hell trying to get it to work! It aint like windows where you click a few times and its done. Nooo linux you have to open up a console and type in 20 lines of wacked up commands. And the documentation that tells you how to do it, suggests your a linux wizard or something! I was extremely confused. It was not a pleasant first time linux experience.

151002 2003-06-11 06:17:00 The newer versions of linux do in fact support most winmodems, and as you having to type out 20 lines? why? I only had to do 2 , 4 words in total. Easy. (Lucent winmodem in RH 6.2) Pheonix (280)
