151005 2003-06-08 12:48:00 I'm getting really fed up with MS word 2000 and XP always resorting to the default US english language for spell checking. Dammit - the americans can't spell!

Someone please tell me how permanently set the default language to NZ english, so everytime the program loads up it stays on NZ. I have tried a few things, but as soon as you colse it down it goes back to US. Is there some option somewhere? A registry hack?

Cheers :)

151006 2003-06-08 12:50:00 Make sure your "normal.dot" template has the correct language set. godfather (25)
151007 2003-06-08 12:52:00 Perhaps u can see why I need it :p - nah just typo :) PoWa (203)
151008 2003-06-08 12:52:00 Normal.dot ?? What do I do with it? PoWa (203)
151009 2003-06-08 13:08:00 Open it up (its in the Templates area) and make sure when its open that the correct language is selected. You can change any f the other features such as formatting options etc that you want as a default. Then save it.

When Word opens a document, it takes on the language that the document was set to when it was created. If you start with a blank document, then it will take on the language set in "normal.dot", irrespective of the settings you have made in other documents. Its a document specific setting.

At least that is my understanding. Caveat Emptor etc.

151010 2003-06-08 13:45:00 Hmmmmmm it doesn't show up in the templates section at all.

I can find it when doing a search of my computer and 2 come up inside my documents and settings folder under my login name...

Do I open them up like that and then save it? er...

151011 2003-06-08 22:13:00 Hi PoWa

I had that problem but didn't need to do anything with normal.dot to fix it.

There are two places in Word where you need to set language options:

Tools/Language/Set Language, and Tools/Options/Dictionary/Language

Just Dictionary or Set Language on its own is not enough.

Set both to NZ English and the dreaded yankee spelling will be banished forever. The odd anomally will still pop up but just keep adding those to your custom dictionary and they will leave you alone.

151012 2003-06-09 08:46:00 Thank you Billy! That worked perfectly :D

One more question:

I'm having trouble getting rid of the personalised menus. I know there is an option somewhere cos I remember finding it in word2000 but it has thus far eluded me in wordXP.

Help ;)

151013 2003-06-09 11:53:00 PoWa,
I don't have OfficeXP... but I think it's in Tools | Customize | Options |

Select:

"Always show full menus"

Cheers, Babe.

151014 2003-06-09 11:54:00 Sorry PoWa, I'm running Win98/Word 2000 on this box and Win2K and Word 2000 on the others so this is an XP-free zone.

Glad we solved your dictionary problem though.:D

Cheers
