2003-06-10 14:28:00 | Hi all. A friend rang to say she couldn't connect to the internet and wanted me to have a look. I did. She hasn't been able to connect for 2 weeks. The dial up connection connects ok. It makes whistling noises which you can hear if you pick up the phone. The 2 little tv's appear at the bottom with occasional flickerings on their screens. IE, Messenger, Kazaa and Ad Aware update all seem to be working properly. But, nothing seems to be going down the telephone line, or coming back. On IE you get the "Page temporarily unavailabe" message. Refreshing doesn't help. When I got home, I checked their account at their Isp and it had registered that I had been online showing how many minutes etc. I gave it a cleanup with ad aware, disk cleanup and regclean. Checked all the modem settings etc. Couldn't see anything obvious. Any suggestions as to what I am missing? Thanks.

2003-06-10 14:39:00 | My father had this problem with his computer. Unfortunately it is a very hard error to fix in my book. Never got a how-to-fix-without-clean-windows-install post. Unless someone new knows. I found out that it was a DNS error and the only apparent way to fix it is by installing windows again. My dad tried reinstalling Windows 98 SE five times before giving up and getting Windows XP professional. Who knows you may have some luck.

2003-06-10 19:55:00 | Hey Are there any firewalls in play?? Some firewalls have the potential to stop DNS look-ups, so your computer cannot resolve www.google.com and therefore not get the website. I would reccomend disabling any firewalls on her computer and then trying again. Also, can you open Command (Start > Run and type "Command" without the quote marks) then type "Ping 210.48.100.45" (without the quote marks). You will either receive 2 replies: 1 - Reply from 210.48.100.45: bytes=XX time=XX TTL=XX or 2 - Request Timed Out If you manage to successfully ping 210.48.100.45 (which will result in response 1), then try pinging "pressf1.co.nz" by replacing 210.48.100.45 in the above statement with "pressf1.co.nz"... This will see whether your friends computer is resolving DNS addresses, or whether it can use IP Addresses. CyberChuck

2003-06-10 19:59:00 | Hi Sparky, > IE, Messenger, Kazaa and Ad Aware update all seem to > be working properly . How do you know IE update is working if it cant open any pages? If you start the computer & you click on Internet Explorer icon does it bring up the dial up connection box? Or do you connect to the isp by using a shortcut on the desktop? Go to Tools - internet options - connections & make sure there is a Dot beside "Always dial my default connection" & click apply . If that don't work maybe someone else has some ideas . | 151660 | 2003-06-10 23:35:00 | I experienced exactly the same problem and solved it thanks to some insistent advise on PF1. I had Sygate firewall installed but disabled and still could not get a DNS connection. Eventually (!) I was persuaded to uninstall the firewall completely and bingo! Problem solved. This was despite having worked perfectly for months with the firewall installed and enabled.. I have not since reinstalled a firewall so I can't say whether a reinstall of Sygate would recreate the problem or not.

2003-06-10 23:38:00 | I forgot to mention, I also reinstalled the dial-up adaptor prior to uninstalling Sygate. I don't know whether this was necessary or not but it's so easy to do that it was my first point to look at when searching for a solution.

2003-06-11 06:40:00 | Lemmie get this fact straight. 1) Other programs can successfully access the net and get a stream of data but IE cant? right? Just needs clarifying. Cheers Patryn
