| 151419 | 2003-06-10 01:12:00 | I have just gone into Control Panel/user Accounts and saw that the account with my name was the Administrator account. I had never given it a password, so did that.. Now I need to enter the PW to log on, fine, that works. I am trying to access the Recovery console using the XP Reinstallation disc. I get to the point where it wants the Administrator PW and the one i use is not valid. Any ideas? |

I have resisted all of these upgrades to date as I am suspicious of MS motives and their phone home and digital rights policies in principle . Is it worth following the Service pack route? Perhaps there is a topic on this already? |

| 151424 | 2003-06-11 14:19:00 | There was no password - but before i went into Recovery Console I added a password - which then did not work. Anyway it seems to be a known fault and is fixed in Service pack 1 - but that is also easier said than done - three or four attempts to download it came up with file not found errors. But just now i have got hold of the PC World Feb 2003 disc with it on. Wish me luck. I am worried that doing the service pack thing will lead to just a bunch of other annoyances. |

When I want to do some REAL work which is most of the time I start by either getting out the backup Hard drive and reinstalling WinXP off the Ghost Image or installing WinXP followed by motherboard drivers followed by modem, printer, scanner etc. Once having all Hardware I follow this by installing WinXP SP1 before installing Office. Before anyone moans.... Yes I know I can slipstream WinXP SP1 into my original. I just haven't had the time. Win SP1 is worth installing. Just my 2 cents worth. :-) |

| 151427 | 2003-06-14 13:40:00 | Well . . . I managed to do it OK - upgrade using the SP1 off last Feb disc . Also installed all the updates via the net after that . BUT - it still did not allow me into the Recovery Console . Which sort of makes sense . The problem was created at the point of installation by Dell it would seem . So I continued to follow the instructions in the Q308402 MS file linked to by wuppo above . This led me to phoning Microsoft - though it took a while to hunt out their number . They were helpful and promised to send the Spcmdcon . sys and Srrstr . dll files needed for the hotfix . However they have not yet arrived 36 hours later . I Googled it but cant find a way to download them . Back to the phone I think . All this to to access my own machine! |
