151379 2003-06-10 01:49:00 I suggest you start with a 'what you see is what you get' graphical editor such as (Free!) Netscape Composer (part of the Netscape Communicator package) available for download from Netscape.com.
The easiest way to start is to save a page or two from a site you like the look of, and play around 'rehashing' them in the editor. Go for a simple page to start with - some of the fancy ones can be quite frightening! With Composer, you can switch from Graphical Mode to HTML, and so you can get a feel for the code that makes up a page, and even modify / add to the HTML, as your confidence grows.
Composer has a simple facility for transferring your masterpieces to a server; which is fine to begin with (you will probably want to install an FTP program later on to give you more direct control of transfers).
Have fun :)

151380 2003-06-10 01:52:00 step 1. give your site a purpose. If your site has a purpose, people will keep coming back to it. you have to make it memorable. otherwise it'll join those millions of other "hi this is me!" sites out there

step 2. decide on a structure/site layout. draw it down on paper. Start with your homepage and then branch down to your sub-pages.

Also decide on an address and a host. If you want a free host, you'll have to look at a site like geocities (you'll have an address like geocities.com and your site will be riddled with advertising placed there by geocities), otherwise if you want to pay for hosting, I'd recommend kiwihosting.net.nz (if you pay for hosting, you can have whatever address you want, provided it's available)

step 3. learn HTML. it's easy to pick up, and if you learn HTML properly, you'll be able to create an effective, good looking, browser-compatible site, first time. There are a number of places on the internet where you can learn, I've always found w3schools to be an excellent resource... here's where you'll want to go:
www.w3schools.com

If you really want to use WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get - pronounced "whizz-e-wig"), then look at Macromedia Dreamweaver

step 4. once your site is built, publish it. upload it to your host of choice.

step 5. update your site. this step is ongoing.
