151664 2003-06-11 07:10:00 Thanx for the quick responses guys,

Hamster; Yes. Does appear to be a DNS prob. Running Me so if all else fails, I'll throw the recovery cd in.

Metla: Yip. Checked that. All seems normal and ok.

Cyberchuck and Capt Andy: No firewalls running. They have something called "McAffee Active Shield" Came installed on the computer some 4 years ago. I'll leave that to 2nd to last to chuck out. Its quite easy so will remove dialup adapyer and reinstall. They had an AOL adapter and a TV adapter that I threw out. Perhaps reinstalling the default apater will fix.

Steve Askew: The always dial has a dot. It dials up ok wether using the desktop shortcut or clicking on IE which brings up the connection box.

kellinabelle: Yip. Restored all the defaults. No go.

tweak'e: Running ME and AdAware 6.

Patryn999: No. The programs appear to open ok and want to work, but theres no data stream. Although the ISP is registering that it is connected and counting the minutes off the account.

I will try all those helpful suggestions next time I get access to the computer, in the meantime, if you think of anything else, please let me know.

Thanks again. I'll keep you updated on progress.

151665 2003-06-11 07:17:00 Had the same symptoms on a PC sometime ago with Win98. Had to delete dial-up account, tcip & Dial-up adaptor (in networking). Restart and reinstall them again. And of course the obligatory restart after network change.
Also, check hardware devices in safe mode with ME. Seems to have a great penchant for accumulating drivers, which can only be seen then.

151666 2003-06-11 07:17:00 When you have IE open click on File at the top left of page & make sure there is NO tick beside "Work Offline".

cheers Steve

151667 2003-06-11 07:29:00 Just make sure DNS is right. :=
Right mouse button on network neighbourhood (or network connecitons in control panel) then select TCP/IP Protocol and properties, then make sure its Obtain DNS automatically. if it is try putting in this and see if it helps:
Primary : 203.97.33.1
Seconday : 203.97.37.1
If that dosent work it could be a Winsock problem. (should be somewhere on ME cd hopefully) winsckxxx.exe

Cheers

151668 2003-06-11 07:30:00 * if its already set to obtain DNS automatically try the DNS servers. Patryn999 (3748)
151669 2003-06-11 12:03:00 Hi Steve,
If the "work offline" was ticked, would that stop AdAware and Kazaa trying to send data?
Thanks

151670 2003-06-11 13:29:00 Hi *Sparky*, this may be a bit of a long shot, but i noticed you said this happened about 2 weeks ago, well i had an identical problem about that time (using xp pro, i.e 6), however i was lucky enough to know exactly what had caused it.
Don't know if it will be the same for your friends puter,(but the 2 week time frame caught my attention) but the cause of it on mine was 2 windows updates, i only knew it was this because i had been working not a problem till then, then installed the 2 updates together, i never worked out which update it was out of the 2 but when i uninstalled them both i got i.e back straight away, well i might have rebooted...
But it may pay to check if your friend has installed these windows updates maybe? and if so uninstall them from add/remove programs.
One of these updates was one that had caused problems with computer performance previously and it was re released, hence the reason i looked at them first when probs. arose. However i haven't noticed anybody else on here having the same prob. as i was going to post but thought it must have just been my machine and possibly still is.
Anyway the updates in question are:
Q811493 & Q815021
And there was actually a thread on here Jen did saying people had installed them no probs, thats why i went ahead after hesitating a few days before installing them.
Anyway hope this may be of help possibly :-)
