151639 2003-06-10 13:09:00 How can I backup or save my NAV definitions and intall them again after I format my HDD so I don't have to install a huge amount of def's all over again? hamstar (4)
151640 2003-06-10 13:15:00 also can i delete the c:/ncdtree folder that came with NAV. It's empty and a messy C:/ drive pisses me off hamstar (4)
151641 2003-06-10 14:47:00 dunno about saving the definitions supplied by live update but you could get them from download.com and store them somewhere.

although they only apear to have the most recent update

download.com.com

Theoretically you shouldn't have to re-download the def's. because microsoft and PC manufacturers think it is wrong. They think that PC's should come with the OS installed, and stored on a help partition. I have yet to hear of a new PC which comes with the windows disc. Mine didn't (ME), and my friends didn't (XP Home). They were Packard Bell, and Hewlett Packard, respectively.

These computers had the ability to revert to an earlier stage in its life. This stage is different (I don't know how) to the stage of System Restore.

If you want to get the latest def's. I think you can get them here X (securityresponse.symantec.com)
Or maybe you'd prefer a zipped file ? (securityresponse.symantec.com)
I hope these help. I don't know if they are any better than the previous example.Good luck.

No you cannot delete that folder, it is apart of NAV & if you delete it NAV will not work correctly.

I am not too sure what is stored in there.

Hope this helps :)

151644 2003-06-11 02:15:00 You should be able to save your current virus defs by saving the C:\Program files\Common files\Symantec Shared folder and its associated sub folders (Virus Defs).

I have successfully restored from just the Virus defs themselves but I seem to remember a problem of some sort on one occasion so it is easier to just save this folder, reinstall NAV after your reformat, then rename the new folder and replace with the saved version. I recommend renaming over deletion as it will allow you to restore it then go ahead with the update if the copied-over defs fail to work properly. You can delete it once everything is OK.

Cheers
