151398 2003-06-10 00:44:00 Ok. Last night, I was sitting down the computer, Copying a CD to MP3. The computer busted out all these sounds at me and shut itslef down. I restarded and then I came up with this blue screen and I had to restard again. The BIOS started doing all this werid stuff and take AGES to detect te IDE's and memory test (used to take... 5 - 8 seconds). Then it says "Floppy Drive Falid" and I have to press F1 (have NEVER had to do that before). It then got to Windows XP Pro loading screen and froze, so I restarded AGAIN and the it finally loading Windows. I got into windows and then it tell me that the system has had a major error. Then the screen starts to buzz and the graphics card starts showing me all this werid stuff. I notice that the motherboard/windows won't see the second CD-Rom drive that is on the same IDE slot as the first and the floppy drive won't show. Windows take age to load up and minimize and the sound through the speakes has this bleeping sound.

What is the problem here. Is it one little thing or serious..... :|

151401 2003-06-10 01:18:00 Is it still doing it if left off for a couple of hours? If it is OK from "cold" , then it is a high chance it is your power supply failing. Only real way to check is substitute a known good one. Pheonix (280)
151402 2003-06-10 01:59:00 sounds pretty serious.
first, id go into the BIOS and make sure everything recognises OK. it sounds like a low level problem.
then, if you cant boot windows, you can run scandisk to check for errors. from a boot floppy (MS had different versions which had some or all of the necessary programs, i generally use the win98 boot disk).
if, for example, the IDE drivers were on a sector which got corrupted somehow, the system might lose access to the hardware.
you could boot into recovery console or with a floppy to do this.
this is possibly just the start, depending on what you find out.
its the wonderful world of windows... on a mac or linux machine you could boot into the OS from a CD and have a full GUI to fix it with.
i guess MS might get there one day...

151403 2003-06-10 02:36:00 What about the other Info you told me on MSN James, like CPU Temp etc.

Im with leaving it off and letting it cold boot..?

151404 2003-06-10 02:45:00 Well, the computer is running fine now but the CPU is showing signs of not working right (lagging heaps). I looked in the BIOS and everything is seen by the motherbaord. I mean, what the hell causes a computer to do this. I wasn't doing anything "wrong" or messing with anything (which is highly unlike me ^_^) and yeah...

I am not running Norton 2002 as I did a reformat about ... a week ago and havn't put it on. I havn't downloaded anything "suspect" since that reformat (as I do monitor everything I download) and havn't used Kazaa Lite since the reform. (which is werid again).

151405 2003-06-10 02:53:00 Ok, I looked inside the computer and the floppy drives' power cord was out and the 1st CD-Rom drive IDE cable was a little lose, so now everything is working fine BUT there still is the question of why the computer did this and will it happen again.

P.S: Have no idea how that happened to the floppy and CD drive... havn't touched the insides for a good month now..

151406 2003-06-10 03:01:00 Sometimes the cables just come loose, cables being slightly too small or large for a snug fit and they can just pop out.

I have to put the FDD cable back in once every 3 weeks at the moment.. Im getting the parents to fork out a few bucks and Im gonna replace it.

It just happens....

Make sure you've checked both ends, the connection to the FDD AND to the mobo :-)

Cheers

Chill.

151407 2003-06-10 21:34:00 Well, my computer hit rock bottom last night. Got home from work at 10:30pm, booted that ***** up and what? Doesn't even turn on? The hard drive light just stays on and sits there (though no noise can be heard). The sreen cable and power is attached fine (checked MANY times) but nothing will show up and it is always in Power Saving Mode. My guess is it is the CPU or Motherbaord that is just stuffed. Any ideas? Can a virus do this? JamesStewart (874)
