151733 2003-06-11 03:09:00 Hi folks

My new fax machine has an intermittent fault - don't you just feel good when the words "intermittent fault" are used?

The fax is a new HP 6110 Officejet - an all in one jobbie. I have followed the manual in setting it up, and contacted HP Support who took me through the whole thing again, but the fault still occurs from time to time.

It is on my adsl line, with a second Faxability number. The fax is set on NZ Language, and to Auto Answer on Single Rings (as recommended by HP Support), on the 5th ring. What happens is that from time to time when I have received and answered a phone call from outside (not the Faxability kind), the fax tries to connect whilst we are talking. Naturally this cuts off the caller, and equally naturally they are annoyed to get a burst of fax tone in their ears. Usually this occurs some time after a fifth ring would have come in. It doesn't happen on all calls.

I can't work out what is causing the fault - this never occured with my old fax machine on the same setup.

Any ideas? Are any of you successfully using computer, phone, and fax on the same adsl line with faxability turned on? Have any of you had the same problem and found a solution - please??!!

Thanks
John

151734 2003-06-11 03:40:00 I cannot see that the faxability itself is the problem, as that simply sends a different "cadence" (or ringing tone) to announce a call .
In all other respects the incoming fax call is the same as any incoming phone call .

I run an incoming line with ADSL and a "fax catcher" (detects the presence of the fax tone on any incoming call and switches it to the fax) .
They all cohabit quite well .

It seems that the 6110 is interpreting "something" at the call commencement time as a fax call, and taking over at the allotted 5 rings time .

It sounds therefore to have more of a relationship to the ringing detection in the 6110 itself than any other factor, its a pity you cannot try another 6110?

I assume you have the ADSL installation correct, in that the fax is on a filter or a filtered socket, as if the 6110 was getting the raw ADSL signal as well it could get confused .

151735 2003-06-13 00:52:00 Thanks godfather. Yes, that sounds clear and makes sense, though I am not sure what to do about it.

I did wonder about having a fax catcher in the line prior to the inbuilt fax catcher in the 6110, but thought that could cause problems.

I have the adsl line connected to a twin outlet faceplate in my office. One outlet is connected to my router without a filter. The other outlet is connected to a filter, then the fax has one of those clunky plugs that is connected to the filter. My phone piggy backs off the fax plug (there is a phone jackpoint in it). So I think the connections are all correct. I laid the cable from the house to my office, but got a phone technician to do the connections at either end.

My phone in the office is a DECT phone. Not sure if they have any nasty habits in relation to faxes?

Thanks. John
