2003-06-12 05:45:00 | A mate has dropped me off his computer, which seems gremlin infested . It has numerous problems but I thought I would tackle one at a time, so first up: He was (is) having trouble connecting to the Internet . Ok, the computer dials and you hear the handshake but it then hangs on the verifying password operation . Eventually times out . Now, Ive found it has two modems installed so I thought this may be a problem so I removed them from settings/control panel/modems, then physically unplugged the modem, and restarted the computer . Blow me down if Win98 didnt report that it had found a AZTECH AT2320 (PNP) Data + FAX +Voice modem and was installing it . Very clever Windows because the Modem is a SpeedCom + Internal V . 90 and is sitting on my bench! At the completion of Windows loading sure enough Settings shows a AZTECH modem installed but the properties button doesnt work or show any details . Naturally it doesnt work! Soooo, I think Ill remove the AZTECH again, remove the only other card, (sound and games port), replace the SpeedCom Modem and see what happens when Windows loads . Sure enough Windows finds a 56k pnp Modem, installs it, and all works well . Now its just a matter of replacing the sound card and all is well . Ha, not likely, Windows finds this sound card, thinks its a Modem and reinstalls it! Grrrrrr . Back to square one . Anyone else struck this? Cheers Bob

2003-06-12 06:01:00 | Have you tried forcing the new modem (soundcard) to use the appropriate drivers? Also check if the IRQ of the S/C and modem are confilcting Cheers Patryn

2003-06-12 06:42:00 | Are you sure its not a model that has a built-in modem on the motherboard? | godfather (25) | |
2003-06-12 06:54:00 | Ummmm, Dont think so g.f. Its an old Packard Bell 133mhz ex Leamings. Although, the Video appears to be on the MB. Also, if one completely removes the sound card from the MB Windows doesnt find this fictitious AZTECH AT2320 (pnp) Data + Fax + Voice Modem. Real queer!

2003-06-12 09:11:00 | Hi BM, Just a thought, some of the older Packard Bells I think had what they call a multimedia soundcard / modem. In other words the modem and the soundcard are all in one. I have worked on many older PC's circa 1995/96 and in some they had this sort of arrangement. Mind you I am not too sure of the name of the card. Hope this helps Repo74

2003-06-12 10:04:00 | I wondered about that Repo but the sound card has nowhere to plug in a telephone cord. Also, this possessed beast apparently worked perfectly OK until quite recently. Its also got another little problem where quite often on start-up the monitor goes into sleep mode and wont wake up!? :( So far Ive tried three different monitors and they all do it so I doubt its monitor problems. I felt sure it might all be resource conflicts but if it is, none are registering Got me licked Bob
