152340 2003-06-13 09:28:00 If my 56K modem logs on at 31k, does this mean that it will remain at 31 or will it adjust during transmission? Pragmatic Win Modem.
Performance is very erratic on ME & XP on two ISP's.

I have considered a USB Modem. Any comments?

152341 2003-06-13 10:11:00 the speed reported is the logon speed. it gives a rough idea on what your net speed is. actuall modem speed could be above or below what has been reported. sounds like you have poor phone lines. try stringing your modem. it will slow it down but be more constant.

USB modems are basicly winmodems. serial externals are hardware modem and tend to handle poor lines better than winmodems.

152342 2003-06-13 11:09:00 My Lucent winmodem occasionally logs on at 31K but mostly 46K on paradise.net. Try downloading a known file of say 500 or 600K and see how long it takes at different times. I don't know if any hidden compresion can occur with some downloads but if you download the same file each time you might get a better idea of how your performance varies. The download rate would depend on the server too and how busy it was I guess but you might find one that doesn't slow the download down at all.
