152250 2003-06-13 05:24:00 Every time I try put documents etc. into 'notepad' and sometimes when I use 'word' the text is in unreadable symbols.

I am using Windows Me.

152251 2003-06-13 06:33:00 Probably it's just 'horses for courses'. Notepad will only read ascii .txt files, other formats will appear as gobbledy-gook. Im not a Word expert, but the basic format is a .doc document, a bit confusing, as in the "olden days" .txt and .doc were often the same format ie. plain vanilla ascii files.

Microsoft try to suppress file extensions from being seen by default, I'd turn them on, and also set to see hidden files etc.

152252 2003-06-13 06:36:00 You should be able to dump Word documents into notepad where they will appear as unformatted text.

Transfer back to Word will be unformatted as well.

But why would you want to put Word docs into Notepad? It is a very simple program wor text only work. I use it as a scratch pad for quick notes and pasted scraps of text because it opens fast.

Perhaps if you explain what you are doing in more detail we might get a better idea of what is going on.

Cheers

152255 2003-06-16 12:14:00 What happens when you try to type somethign in to document?

It might just be that the font needs changing.

152256 2003-06-17 07:08:00 How or where do you get manuals that require notepad Jaunty?

Notepad is dedicated to files with a *.txt suffix, but as I said in an earlier post, you can dump most formats into it and it will accept them, but stripped of formatting.

Manuals usually come in *.doc or *.pdf formats and if you are trying to open pdf files with notepad there is no hope of success.

It would help if you could identify in more detail what you are trying to do, the file names of the documents that get corrupted and where they come from (in generic terms anyway). Notepad really doesn't sound like the right vehicle for your needs.
