152148 2003-06-13 04:00:00 Okay.. First things first is Linux Networking, Ive never done it?
Ive always used Samba to help out.
So,
The PC's connect all fine and everything..
Now, I have a CD-R/W in a PC aptly named P300 (Bet ya cant guess the processor speed :p).
Both PC's are running RedHat 9, and I wanna share the CD-R/W over the LAN so my main RedHat PC can burn from it? Ive heard its possible, and easier than using NeroNET in doze?

Thanks

152149 2003-06-13 05:19:00 I would set up sshd on the P300, then use ssh to connect to it from the other computer(s).

When sshd is running, from one of the clients just use:

ssh 192.168.0.7 -l username

Replacing the address & username with something relevent for the P300. It will ask for the users password will give you a normal terminal on the remote system.

If you just want to run a specific app, you can add it after the above line eg:

ssh 192.168.0.7 -l username k3b

Which will run the cd burner app I use (K3B).

You can add the commands to a gnome/kde app launcher thing to save typing, but you will need to turn on "show terminal" so you can enter your password.

If it complains about not having a DISPLAY or somethig, add the -X option to the above commands.

It will work with any application because X uses a client-server design, allowing the client and server to be on seperate machines. And unlike vnc you can hardly tell its running over a network.

152150 2003-06-13 07:28:00 I use PuTTY from Win32 (And Im using VMWare at the moment...)

Basically I heard you can mount it like a local CD-Rom?

Is that possible?
In the mean time.. Ive saved this thread and I'll get 2 work later this evening!

152151 2003-06-13 14:13:00 I cant get the GUI going :(

Im used to using PuTTY in Win32 so Im all comfortable with the command line.. but what about X?

I add the -X to it and dont get anything?

152152 2003-06-14 07:46:00 I though you said both machines were running linux.

The above stuff will work, but you will need to install an Xserver on the windows machines.

There is a windows port of xfree available at: sources.redhat.com

When its setup you will get roughtly the same as using a linux machine:
