152089 2003-06-13 01:12:00 Not sure if this is old or new news?

Read on Lockergnomes that Microsoft will continue support
for Win98 until 16 Jan 2004,an extention of 6 months!

Then drop it completely as of 16 Jan 2005!

My guess is that it ties in with with the launching of "Longhorn"
in late 2004-early 2005,as Windows users may be reluctant to
pay for XP in the short term, then shell out again for Longhorn?

Cheers,Kiwitas,;-)

152090 2003-06-13 01:57:00 So, what exactly does it mean when they stop supporting it?
Does it just mean that you cant phone up Microsoft and pay anymore for assistance?
Im meaning from the End-User POV here :-)

152091 2003-06-13 02:05:00 I think it will mean no more updates and no more ringing them up or emailing for help on something. Which a lot of you out there probably don't do as it is. -=JM=- (16)
152092 2003-06-13 03:43:00 As well as no more updates no more existing programs for Win98, like IE 5.5 SP2 can no longer be downloaded from MS site. Terry Porritt (14)
152093 2003-06-18 13:17:00 Yes that's the current story.
They were originally intending to drop support for WIN98/98SE as at the end of June 2003 but it appears that they have decided to extend until January next year.
I have created my own Windows 98 Reinstallation Kit in preparation for when Micro$oft finaally pull the plug on Windows 98. Read about in an Australian PC magazine and thought that it was a rather good idea.
My kit contains:
1: Download of all Win98 udates/patches etc from Micro$oft's corporate website. www.microsoft.com
2: All Micr$oft knowledge base articles/suggested articles/full text search articles etc pertaining to Win98 copied and pasted into Word Docs.
3: Extra copies of Win98 boot disk.
4: Downloaded and saved updated Win98-related drivers for all my hardware and software (as applicable)
5: Downloads of all Internet Explorer versions from 5.0 onwards (including service packs).
6: The same for Windows Media Player from version 6.0 onwards.
7: Copied all my hardware device drivers on CD-ROM and/or floppy disk
8: Copied useful system utilities such as DirectX, Adobe Acrobat and Winzip to the kit.

Burn't it all to CD-R (2 copies) and stored in a safe place along with an extra original Win98SE Install CD-ROM I purchased on Trade Me (always some up for sale there).

I am prepared!
Deeply suspicious of DRM (Digital Rights Management) Nazis such as Microsoft and the Recording industry vis-a-vis 'Illegally' downloaded MP3 files etc and want the option of reverting to Win98 with Windows Media Player at a version prior to the 'spyware' included by Bill & his mates at Redmond in WMP9.
I rate Win98 as possibly a better o/s than XP (and definitely better than ME).

If any body wants more details re the reinstallation kit just reply back.

Cheers all

152094 2003-06-18 13:50:00 Remember Mohammed, when you download the new updates for win98, they could include spyware as well. Therefore you have just as much spyware as windowsXP and are far worse off because its an inferior OS :)

Microsoft aren't stupid enough to only put their spyware in only media player. They are smarter than that, and include it in "Critical!" updates, which everyone is dum enough to download :p

What can you do? - linux I guess :p

152095 2003-06-18 13:59:00 what does drop it all completely mean?? why set a 2nd date after the 1st?

one of my machine is still w/ win95. not enof hdd :(
we can still get updates.

i bet they jus say they not support it. not even take money for it. windoze shutdown :D

152096 2003-06-18 14:01:00 that was we can still download the old updates. there is no new one :( nomad (3693)
152097 2003-06-18 14:08:00 win 98 is a terrible piece of software anyway,...in hindsight that is.

All non-support means is no patching of problems and no whql drivers.

Doesn't mean people wont produce hardware and drivers for it, just that they wont be ms approved.

Which is pretty irrelevant, as an ms guarantee isn’t worth squat, and their os's aren’t any better after patching so that’s no loss either.

152098 2003-06-19 09:28:00 That is quite useful information, Mohammad. I have downloaded and saved my Win 98 updates as well but installing them after a reformat is a major pain in the neck. Does anyone know if a batch file or something could be written to install the whole lot of them automatically, with a reboot between each install? Susan B (19)
