152078 2003-06-12 23:08:00 Hi folks.

I have Nortons System Works 2000 installed. Recently when running speed disk I had problems which I could not solve and had to take puter to technician. He advised me to get rid of speed disk, cleansweep and crash guard as they can cause problems

I am left with Nortons Disk Doctor and would appreciate any comments as to whether I should keep this and use it as necessary, or could this possibly give me future problems also.

OS 98SE

Thanks Smithie

152079 2003-06-12 23:15:00 Norton Crash Guard should be renamed Nortons Crash Cause. Norton no longer supports that product due the problems it tended to cause. So feel free to get rid of that one.

Cleansweep I felt personally was too invasive and caused some problems for me whilst trying to install programs - but wait to see what other peoples thoughts are on this one.

Speed Disk should be OK to keep. It is important though to remember to look after the health of your disk by running Scandisk (or Nortons disk doctor) to keep the drive error free regularly.

152080 2003-06-12 23:43:00 I would go along with JenC, I have System Works 2002 Professional and that doesnt have Crashguard because of the problems it had caused.

I never bothered to install CleanSweep as I already had a variety of cleaners, and the write up in the manual didnt appeal, there are plenty of free utilities that will do more or less the same jobs as CleanSweep.

This is what I have installed:
Norton Disk Doctor
Norton WinDoctor
SpeedDisk
Optimisation Wizard
One Button Checkup

Not sure if all of these are in version 2000 though.

A free cleaner is Toniarts EasyCleaner, site is below, the other cleaners I use are not free, like System Mechanic.

152081 2003-06-12 23:49:00 just to ad to Jen C ....

cleansweep isn't to bad. you will need to turn it off when installing activeX controls as it blocks them (eg windows updates) it dos come in handy for uninstalling those programs that don't uninstall.

keep speed disk. its very good.

>Recently when running speed disk I had problems which I could not solve

what problems?

did you do nortons updates? (i'm not meaning auto updates either)

152082 2003-06-13 00:28:00 Hi tweak'e.

I was hoping no one would ask what the problem was but will try and explain actually what happened. I ran speed disk and when I came back it showed an error had occurred and to "Run NDD 32 to correct"
I started NDD and immediately crash guard came up and it it could not help to fix whatever had caused the problem. So I had to reboot.

Then the puter froze with the words "Disk Boot Failure,Insert System Disk and press enter" I was now out of my depth so had to call in the expert. That is history now but I am trying to avoid this happening again and this is why I am reluctant to use anything but NDD if it can be considered "safe"

You mention keep speed disk. It is very good. According to the tech. using that caused my problem and I should not use it again. Yes I did the updates you refer to.

Anyway thanks for your comments and also to the others above that have responded so far.

152083 2003-06-13 00:40:00 i doubt very much speed disk caused your problem. i've used it for years (from ver 2000 to 2003) however i do use the verify writes optoin which slows it down a bit but helps if there is a fault with the disk. most likly your problem was caused by a fault on the disk which is why it pays to run scandisk or diskdoctor before defragging. tweak'e (174)

I notice a boost in speed.A small one.But microsoft's defragmenter I didn't see any boost !
