152237 2003-06-14 03:12:00 Hi PoWA

If you are in doubt about the orthodox meaning of WE, the acronym means Word For The Week-End.

Alternative meanings spring to mind, but asterisks would be needed in some profusion and since this is a family forum, perhaps we should draw a veil over those possibly *cough* unusual options.

Cheers

[b][pre]But then, perhaps you did know what W E meant,
and were looking for possible alternatives.

Well Agent, I think it is nice that you are sensitive to other people's feelings. There are a lot of people on this forum who most certainly are not. :|

> That cuts my audited readership down to single figures, and I'm not sure the dog can read, so that takes the numbers even lower.

I don't believe that for a minute Billy, but even if it was true it is quality that counts, not quantity. ;-)

Murray P: I agree with everything you said. Long may Billy's WFTWE continue. :-)

She can... so your can count her in the audit!

152240 2003-06-14 04:09:00 Good gawd! Lighthearted or not, who cares! Stressful week or not - aren't there more meaningful ways to de-stress? It's just words and words are easily strewn about either with consideration or a total lack of consideration to their impact on the intended audience. (Good or otherwise!)

And I wonder who the "lot of people on this forum who most certainly are not [nice]" are? Looks like someone has gone and made a decision on that one.

Your guess is as good as mine ;-)

Ouch :O That's a bit rough actually Epsilon.:(

As you can see, I have offered up some 54 Words FTWE and I actually spend quite some time researching and preparing each post (it is a sort of hobby of mine) so I hope you base your comments on a representative sample.

I try to make WFTWE topical if I can (search ANZAC WE for example), but in the absence of a newsworthy event I look for unusual or novel words that might strike a chord with readers or even just bring on a wry smile. It is all in good fun.

I have found and discarded may otherwise interesting, stimulating or useful words because I felt that they might offend a small proportion of the readership of PF1. I resist the temptation to be clever and try to be humorous instead.

However, reading WFTWE is not compulsory, it is a freedom of choice thing. If people decide that WFTWE has the potential to offend, they can simply not open the posts. If curiosity gets the better of them, then they have no cause for complaint. Surely I don't need to add a Government Health Warning?

That said, you are entitled to your views, as I am to mine and I take no offence and I am sure none was meant. I only responded because you may unknowingly represent a silent minority, and an expanation of the philosophical basis for WFTWE may answer others' questions and let it get back to being a fun post to finish the working week.

Cheers

152244 2003-06-15 00:09:00 My view was intended as a generalised opinion on the use of language as a communication tool, and the way words are used, abused, and misconstrued. Oddly enough, you appear to have taken that opinion on board personally. Epsilon (2806)
152245 2003-06-15 01:10:00 Hmmm............

I didn't take it personally at all Epsilon, however by confirming that it was a generalised comment, and not identifying the context of your comments, you seem to have yourself committed the self-same error of "strewing words" that you were trying to highlight: :D

>It's just words and words are easily strewn about either with

Once again, I stress that I personally had and have no problem with your opinion, and agree with you that words used without consideration can have positive or negative effects. That is why I prepare each post with care.

Perhaps next time you comment on OT posts such as WFTWE though, you will not only consider your use of words carefully, but clearly identify the context of your comments so as not to inadvertently offend. Fortunately I have the hide of a rhinocerous so don't worry about offending me. Many have tried, all have failed. :^O

152246 2003-06-15 02:01:00 Error? What error?
What? Me, worry?

80% of communication is through seeing and listening with thine own eyes and ears. Difficulties are bound to arise through 'remote' exchanges.
