| 152698 | 2003-06-15 09:30:00 | Is it possible to password protect a folder in Win98? Say you didnt mind the kids playing on your computer but didnt want your personal accounts destroyed, is it possible to put them in a folder and have a password to open it. Cheers Bob |

| 152702 | 2003-06-15 13:31:00 | Here's a little secret of mine from way back... Create a new folder and give it a unique name, dont forget the name of this folder because it will act as a password of sorts. You could name it "secret" but if your'e really paranoid name it something like "a1d3r5d" - just don't forget the name! Now copy all the data you want protected into this folder. Next, open up a dos prompt and type: ren [NAME OF FOLDER] (ALT)255[NAME OF FOLDER] Don't type ALT!, this means hold down the ALT key, only release the ALT when you have typed in "255" plus the folder name without spaces. example; ren secret (hold down alt)255secret(release alt) , press enter. Go back to explorer, and if done correctly your "secret" folder should now be named "_". You cannot open the folder or delete it and right clicking it and selecting properties shows that it's size is zero bytes and contains zero files. Now the only way of accessing this folder is to rename it by reversing the above command. Just remember though, if you dont know the name you can't rename it or otherwise access it. |

| 152704 | 2003-06-15 23:00:00 | Im with Rod J on Folder Guard, but that will cost ya.. FProt by Mikkotech will do just the trick and more! Search google for them, their URL may be mikkotech.com I think? |

| 152706 | 2003-06-16 01:15:00 | Two freebies spring to mind. PGP which encrypts folders and I think whole drives as well or Scramdisk. Scramdisk is what we use, it creates a virtual drive which is invisible until the password(s) are put in at which point it appears with it's own drive letter. Save all your private stuff into that drive and demount the drive via the menu, providing you have cleared the passwords it will request the password when you try and mount the drive again or you can exit Scramdisk altogther and access it again via the Program menu as required. Comes with 128bit encryption including Blowfish and others. I think Scramdisk in its earlier form has been replaced with a newer version called DriveCrypt. http://www.scramdisk.clara.net/ |
