I guess generically notebooks might be heavier and have most features built in, while laptops are lighter and have more optional plug-in accessories to keep the base size and weight down.

Or vice-versa, or maybe not ?:|

I have a feeling that "Notebook" was introduced when they really slimmed down the laptop market several years ago to make people realise there was a massive difference in size (weight dropped several kgs) from the briefcase sized "laptops" of early to mid 90s to much closer to the laptop size we have today (typical Dell or Compaq laptops). I think what we call laptops today are what they called notebooks back then.
