152471 2003-06-14 04:17:00 Can some one help me please. I can read my floppy discs but when I try and Write to them I get the message that the disc is write protected but it is not. I have tried another drive unit but get the same result Rodders (4015)
152472 2003-06-14 07:54:00 Have you tried reformatting your floppies before writing to them? Capt Jimbo (17)
152473 2003-06-15 22:13:00 Well Rodders, if the floppies can be read, then there is a fair chance they have been formatted otherwise there wouldn't be any data on them to read, so Cap'ns suggestion may not be the reason.

After reading this post I was wondering if there was anywhere else in the computer that write-inhibit could be applied to a floppy drive. I can't think of anything off-hand but it seems logical that if HDDs can be made read only without a tab to move, the same could apply to a floppy drive.

I haven't time to explore this theory right now, but if anybody else has ideas I'm sure they will post them.

Cheers

Go to My Computer then right click on your floppy drive and check sharing.

If sharing is enabled the default is read only.

Worth a look.

152475 2003-06-21 02:01:00 Thank you Billy T. I tried to find any thing in "My Computer" for sharing the floppy drive but there was nothing . When I think back this fault occurred after I down loaded an up date to I.E. 5.5 and an up date to Legacy Family tree program. I have checked for conflicts in setup but found nothing.

Cheers, Rodders.

152476 2003-06-21 03:11:00 I once had this problem with a 5¼" floppy drive. The write-protect sensor was dead. I spent some time shorting two pads on the PCB with a screwdriver while writing a disk. :D

Can you read the disks, and get directories?

Check the "security" section of your BIOS. The Phoenix BIOS on my "new" Digital P166 box allows restricting the use of floppies.
