152708 2003-06-16 02:43:00 It doesn't work in win98 either. :\ Says 'required parameter missing' PoWa (203)
152709 2003-06-16 03:11:00 What you want is Magic Folders (www.magicfolders.com I guess). This is a nifty little program you can download for free and does exactly what you want and more. I've been using it for years and it's foolproof. colmack (2939)

I forgot to mention that you need Num Lock enabled, and when typing in 255 you need to use the numbers on the right of your keyboard because that's where ascii characters are generated.

152712 2003-06-17 02:04:00 Dahhhhhh, all fixed.

Don’t know quite what was going on but I was getting to DOS by restarting the computer in DOS mode. (Windows not loaded)

When I got sick of this and remembered there is a DOS prompt available from windows with windows running everything came right.

Maybe this little trick likes windows loaded?????????

152713 2003-06-17 03:10:00 Oh I finally got it working in win98. That numlock key and using keypad numbers made all the difference. What a handi little trick ay :) PoWa (203)
152714 2003-06-17 09:07:00 Yep, I’m impressed.

Just wonder what would happen if one mistyped ALT255 and got ALT252 or another wrong number?

Could be interesting. :^O

152715 2003-06-17 10:12:00 That's quite interesting Binary Boy, there is possibly a related posting further down the page about a locked folder, see System File Check, posted by Smithie 38.

The ALT255 system is not totally secure though, using Vernon D. Buergs' dos "List" program you can see inside a "locked" folder, read and edit text files and run dos programs, but not Windows programs of course.

152716 2003-06-17 10:47:00 Terry, I thought I was just about the last person to use the wonderful DOS "List" program :D. It's such a useful little utility to view any file in ASCII or Hex. I'm glad someone else uses it still :) I only wish it supported long file names and was Y2K compatible. Rod J (451)
152717 2003-06-17 11:11:00 Yep, it's still a pretty useful program. Ive added it to the right click 'Send To'. I think the last version was 9.3a, 1997 Terry Porritt (14)
