| 1315119 | 2012-12-21 22:03:00 | Downside of the Nexus appears to be the camera: it is only 1.2 mp. Not sure of the other Nexus specs but apparently the iPad can do 720 HD video recording and has both front and back cameras. Both have 3G and WIFI I believe. Sister-in-law and one of our friends (older woman) both recently bought iPads and they are raving how they love them. SWMBO is now interested but the price (luckily) is stopping her from impulse buying. I believe the iPad is about $780 and a Nexus is around $430, so it is a big price difference (both 32 Gb). |

| 1315122 | 2012-12-21 23:16:00 | Was "using" a Nexus (actually, trying hard to keep the drool off it) last week and gave it to a neighbour (age 84) to compare with his iPad original model. He has a Nexus now. I am still pondering - it is nice enough but I prefer the kindle for e-reading in the sunshine, so I doubt a tablet is in my immediate future. I am getting embarrassed by the amount of electronic stuff I cart about, and the number of batteries that need charging regularly. Kindle wins there too - as long as I charge it once a month it doesn't go below 50% charge. In spite of all that, I was still unhappy about returning the beast to it's owner. They do know how to trip my "Want-it" gland. | R2x1 (4628) | ||

| 1315124 | 2012-12-22 01:35:00 | You can get a Nexus 7 at JBHiFi for $333 www.jbhifi.co.nz Thanks never thoughT of JB. I was about to get one online from ebay for a similar price, along with a few cheapo chinese ones for about NZ $80 - for some 8 - 10 year olds. It seems some of the 100's of chinese tablet companies primarly based in Shenzen, China, claim to supply Samsung, and approved with certain certificates. I saw one CPU that was described similar in more expensive tablets. It's good to hear about the higher end specs for the premium tablets, but not quite clear who supplies who, which it appears are all from the same territories in asia. Apple has their approved supplier list (www.apple.com) - many Asian suppliers and also Samsung. Therefore if Asus made the Nexus, then it's possible chinese companies supply them, and possibly make their own generic tablets. Bit similar with mobile phone batteries a few years back. A entire chain of branded/non branded cell phone (batteries) sourced from the same or similar factories. |
