Yes, apparently there is a stress-induced closing down sale and everything has to go. Abject fear is a great laxative and diuretic, and I think it is part of our prehistoric 'fight or flight' response, whereby we clear the decks for action as the Tyrannosaurus Rex (or equivalent) approaches. There are some graphic accounts of this effect in William Shirer's magnificent book 'The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich' (all 1356 pages of it plus 80 pages of indexing and historic references). An extraordinary book that demolishes myths and legends, and reveals the cold hard facts. Not a book for the faint-hearted I'm afraid, it can and will make you weep at times.
