The problem is general public see specs and tend towards apple (since they have a good marketing strategy and solid reputation). Then the mildly educated and fanboys (of the bicker and rant about apple/samsung variety) look at actual benchmarks to choose. The rest made up of people in the know or sensible people go into a shop and buy based on what will perform best for their needs and desires.

This is my advice to you, ignore the marketing, it's ****. Ignore the specs, they are irrelevant since the iPad and the Nexus will perform your daily tasks absolutely fine. Go into a shop and pick up a 7 or mini and decide. Which UI/functions perform best for YOU at a price YOU can afford. Remember, you are using it not anyone else. However, take into account what others have said such as battery life, real world usability etc. John H makes some interesting points on his experience setting up a N7 vs iPad as well as it's use as an eReader. I can't make a comment since I don't own an N7 or iPad.

1315100 2012-11-29 09:24:00 From my own experience, I haven't used someone else's and I don't have one myself so when I try a tablet out or even a cellphone, I don't get much feedback from it. I'm equally lost on all of them. It would take me a while to even learn how to get to the hompage screen so what I get at the end at the shop is, this is the Android way and this is the Apple way.

I think either one would get the job done for most people but marketing/brand power is huge motivation. Some people may just lust for an Apple. And in re: to cellphones, many could get the job done with just a $199 device.

1315101 2012-11-29 19:24:00 I had been wondering how the Nexus would be as ereader. Would the text be easier to read than the Kindle?

I have never used a Kindle but the Sony reader was similar. I find the Nexus to be vastly superior to the Sony. First, the screen resolution is much better, so text is crisp and there is better contrast. Secondly I don't need a good light source to read the Nexus, unlike the Sony - that was always a frustration with the Sony.

I should have mentioned in my first post that the Nexus 7 has the advantage (over other android devices) of being supplied by Asus/Google. The consequence is that it is fed the latest Android OS updates - I received v 4.2.1 two days ago. My Samsung device stayed way behind developments because Samsung seems disinterested in feeding updates to its customers. And of course the build quality of the Nexus is excellent as well.

1315102 2012-11-29 19:32:00 The Nexus 7 screen size is better for an ereader than that of the Sony/Kindle as well. The extra real estate makes it more user friendly for customising (ie enlarging) font sizes whilst keeping a useful amount of text on each page. John H (8)

Don't buy it. In short, its cheap crap. I bought a cheap android tablet like that and its awful. If you want a cheap android tablet, get a nexus 7.

1315106 2012-11-30 05:14:00 If you go for 'feel' the Nexus 7 feels better in the hand because of its rubberised, texturised backing, in contrast to that of the iPad (All Generations)

Also it is now really hard to keep track of what iPad you will be buying, the iPad 2 is still on sale, the old 'new' iPad (3rd Gen.) is still on sale, and the new 'new' iPad (4th Gen.) is now out.
Very confusing right?

1315107 2012-11-30 14:17:00 Nexus 7 has better screen and processor. Furthermore, it has home screen rotation. File system access is a huge plus a plus. It is very useful especially when emailing attachments. KellyJM (16726)
