I really hope this doesn't happen. This is why it's important to have *some* competition in the market, even if you have a clearly dominant brand. The existence of other brands that are some what competitive stop this.

1315849 2012-12-02 04:24:00 i read somwhere that this would be only for some MB's or something like that GameJunkie (72)
1315850 2012-12-02 04:24:00 making them all SoC will improve a lot of things, I reckon they'll keep up standalone builds and just make SoC boards for OEM's and certain consumer builds such as HTPC's and the likes. It will simplify design and improve the performance and cost a bit too. Will also allow intel into the tablet PC market (well improve their entry anyway) reduce the size of laptops/all in one PC's and make them much more efficient.

My standing? Go for it but DON'T kill off the removable CPU entirely!!!

1315851 2012-12-02 07:07:00 I all my years of making my own PC's I have never upgraded the CPU.

I have always gone for low to mid range mbs and cpus.

And by the time I am ready to upgrade I have found it better to get a whole new mbo, cpu and ram combo.

And I have always bought AMD

1315852 2012-12-02 09:22:00 I would be more worried about the BGA package itself in terms of reliability.

We all know how well that goes for chipsets, GPUs, PS3, Xbox360... BGA does not fare well on big hot chips with heavy heatsinks.

1315853 2012-12-02 09:30:00 I have read the article but how exactly is it? Is it gonna be a motherboard with the CPU soldered on or is it going to be a complete box unit (prepacked) like the Macs?

If it's the latter what would happen to the many many different motherboard manufacturers? If they are gonna have preboxed units you def won't need the so many diff motherboard brands yet models.

1315854 2012-12-02 09:58:00 If the motherboard makers have any sense they'll release the CPUs on their own separate boards and re-introduce the slot interface.

I don't think Mac-style complete system would work too well, a lot of people want to customise too many other things.

Worse is that the current multitude of motherboards lets you choose one with exactly the features you want. If the CPU and board are integrated, you get what they give you, that's it, and if you don't like what they give you - too bad.

As I read on another article, reliability of the board itself is going to be another issue. Motherboards fail far more often than CPUs - people aren't going to be impressed if they have to take the cost of replacing both motherboard and still-working CPU.

Or perhaps this will simply improve the market for BGA rework stations.

1315855 2012-12-02 10:49:00 If Intel is moving to non upgradeable it's their motive, so I imagine the no. of motherboards available to reduce.

Intel can manufacture the no. of CPUs in terms of the orders received from motherboard manufacturers. So they can close to eliminate unsold units. That becomes the problem for the motherboard manufacturers, they ordered the no's. But maybe it would still be competitive ... If the item goes a bit of date or loses fashion the price may reduce. It just means that you cannot pick the cheapest of each item but you now might be pick the cheapest combo.

If Intel wants to be mean, they could go like Mac style. Have a few mobo mfg's as buddies, brandname the whole unit as Intel, as in the Mac brand or the gaming consoles. Charge a price premium, little differentiation between local products or parallel imports (like Mac stuff). Bring in Intels lifestyle stores, and cut out the middleman.
