153017 2003-06-16 12:35:00 I have had an ongoing problem for several weeks with a "Windows Registry Error" box opening intermittently when I start Windows 98 .

I tried just following the instructions in the box to restart the computer so it can fix the problem, but this sends the machine into an endless cycle of fixing and then the message reappears again . . . I've also tried going into DOS and using scanreg /fix, then scanreg/opt .

As this problem is intermittent, I also tried doing scanreg /backup /comment when I had a clean startup, so I could restore this registry the next time I had a problem . Restoring this backup solves the problem sometimes, not other times .

There is a possibility that this might be connected with IE6, because I note that I have been getting IE6 error windows for the same time period I've had this problem, but had never seen one before prior to that .

I'm afraid I'm a total non-techie, so the above explanation is as advanced as I can give . I hope it makes sense to someone!

153020 2003-06-16 19:43:00 Hi Roly,

Just to add to the thoughts here, I have had this problem on many machines where I work and 99% of them have been fixed by replacing the ram. I think that when Windows loads it stores the registry or part of the registry in ram, if the ram is faulty then of course Windows thinks the registry is faulty, hence the cycle of registry corruptions. Try taking the ram out one at a time if you have more than one stick of ram. If you only have one, then borrow some from a mate then try it. It may work. This might be the problem, as I said earlier, most of these problems were onmachines that had come in with the same sort of regisrty errors.

153021 2003-06-17 07:53:00 Microsoft Windows 98 4 . 10 . 2222 A

I believe the Windows 98 I have is Service Pack 1 .

This problem first occurred after a friend upgraded my processor for me . As for installing . . . I think about the time this happened only two things were installed - MSN Messenger Update, and Neverwinter Nights . . . . However, in an effort to resolve this problem, I completely uninstalled Windows 98 and all my exisiting progammes and reinstalled them . However, it came back almost immmediately after reinstalling Windows 98, and certainly before I began reloading my other programmes (and I have not reinstalled MSN Messenger at all) .

The wording of the error message is along the lines of: "Windows has detected a registry error . Press Ok to restart, and Registry Checker will fix the error . " This wording is from memory, and not exact, as I haven't had the problem recur today .

I have also completely replaced all my RAM, as an earlier search on this problem indicated that that might be the source of the problem . But even with the new RAM, the problem still intermittently appears .

And a mysterious ~ file did begin to appear occasionally on my desktop at about the same time this all began to happen, as well as some never-seen-before IE crashes .

153022 2003-06-17 08:10:00 Repo is right; I have seen this behaviour before and it in the cases I have seen it is almost always cased by RAM. TerryW (2183)
153023 2003-06-17 08:36:00 You could try norton utils or Fix-It to repair the problem , I have both if needed kiwibeat (304)
153024 2003-06-17 08:47:00 I have had this problem a few times and it was usually caused by updating MSN Messenger . Reverting to the previous version fixed it . Other times it usually fixed itself after restoring a good copy of the registry and backing it up .

With your problem it could be the RAM but I would be more inclined to think it was due to either MSN or the update to IE 6 . I would think that reinstalling Windows would not wipe out the underlying conflicts those updates may have caused . I would add that the registry error only cropped up when MSN was actually used so you can see the pattern if that is the cause .

Maybe you could try not using MSN for a while and if the problem is still there, uninstall IE 6 to return to your previous version and see what happens .

153025 2003-06-17 11:04:00 Thanks for the responses, everyone.

RAM ... I've replaced it all with new RAM, and still have the problem.

MSN ... completely uninstalled, then hard disk totally reformatted, and Windows 98 reinstalled - problem still there!

IE ... seems a likely contender, as the problem has co-incided with error messages there. I might try your suggestion or unistalling it and going back to IE5, if I can work out how to do that.

153026 2003-06-17 11:11:00 Roly, jucould you clear up something for me. How did you "uninstall" Win 98. Did you start the PC from a Boot disk floppy and format the disk? or another method like install from Win98 CD over top of existing install? Pheonix (280)
