2003-06-16 03:44:00 | I run Windows XP (Home) on a brand new computer. I've installed Norton Antivirus and Office 2000. Everything is wonderful, except the time it takes to shut down (2-3 minutes) which really bugs me. Should I be worried about this, or just live with it? Defragmenting and cleaning out excess files makes no difference. Has anyone else had this problem? Any suggestions? | colmack (2939) | |
2003-06-16 04:19:00 | Do you have Win XP SP1??? & have you run windows update??? | stu140103 (137) | |

2003-06-16 04:42:00 | That is a rather a long time to shut down. Was it as slow prior to installing Norton Antivirus and Office? | tommy (2826) | |
2003-06-16 06:27:00 | Mine takes about 5mins to shutdown. But thats cos I have windows clear the 1gig pagefile on shutdown - security reasons. You could try seeing if that option is turned on or not? Have a look through your group policy editior: Run -> gpedit.msc -> enter.

2003-06-16 20:19:00 | Tommy: shutdown didn't use to take that long when I first got the computer (January this year) but I'm certain I would have noticed if the problem began immediately after installing either of the new programs. It was some time afterwards- but I can't remember exactly when. PoWa: thanks for your help - this sounds promising, but it also sounds scary - my abilities with computers don't extend beyond what Mr Gates plans for the general public and I'm wary of anything that sounds as if it could get me into trouble that I don't know how to get out of. I certainly haven't knowingly turned on the option you speak of - surely this can't be the cause of the problem if I didn't turn on the option? I'm the only user of the computer.

Make sure you have administrator acess, then: Start menu -> Run -> Type in: gpedit.msc -> hit enter Expand the first 'Windows Settings' tree. Under that expand the 'security settings' tree, Then the 'Local policies' tree Now click on the security options folder thing. You should see some stuff appear in the right hand pane. Scroll down to "Shutdown - Clear virtual memory pagefile". See if it is enabled or whatever, change it to disabled by right clicking and selecting properties. Do you have system restore turned on? Maybe windows is trying to take a snapshot of your PC before it shuts down. Right click on 'My Computer' and click properties. Then go to the 'System Restore' tab, and see what options you have in there.. |

2003-06-17 03:17:00 | I have switched on Hibernate for that reason, slow shut down. If you would like to give it a try, it can be found in power options in control panel. Like you I am no computer wiz, found no probs with Hibernate and it starts quicker too.You can always switch it off if you don't like.

2003-06-17 23:50:00 | thanks, cicero - moving away from the problem of the slow shutdown, and on to hibernation I followed the help guide for enabling hibernate. I want to manually put the computer into hibernation. Following the instructions, I checked the 'enable hibernate' box in the hibernation tab of power options properties. So far, so good. Trouble is, when I click Start and Shut Down, I don't get the option to hibernate, which Help tells me I will. Any comments anyone?
