| 152841 | 2003-06-16 12:15:00 | Hi Stu. Updated the list as requested :) You don't want to help me keep it updated do you? We can make a faq or something, as jetstream/jetstart questions are quite common these days? :) | PoWa (203) | ||
| 152842 | 2003-06-16 12:16:00 | PJ, I confirm that you don't need an extra phone line. You only need a phone line and anyone using the web now on dial-up will have a phone line. Thats why I said a normal phone line and not a new one. |

| 152843 | 2003-06-16 23:34:00 | Thanks everyone-I am clear about the monthly set cost-but the data usage-If I used my connection to download music, emails, a bit of surfing ect how much would I use? Also I have a Toshiba Laptop what would I be looking at paying for the modem? or is it better to go wireless? TIA everyone | charmed (1903) | ||
| 152844 | 2003-06-16 23:49:00 | With a 128k connection the download speed is about 1 MB per minute. I use my connection for my home based business, and do not download any pirated music or applications, I have a significant amount of email attachments however. I have a 5 MB international cap, and typically use 300 - 400 MB (0.3 - 0.4 GB) of international traffic and a total of around 1 GB including national traffic. I could never reach 5 GB. So no extra data charges will apply to me. You would need to download international data for about 80+ hours each month to exceed 5 GB, or 160+ hours to exceed 10 GB (whichever ISP you decide on will determine the cap). I cannot believe the average user would reach those figures downloading legitimate data from the web! Re the modem, you would need an external wireless access point/ ADSL combo unit and wireless LAN card. Probably $600 - $700? Its probably a bit cheaper to use an ethernet connected ADSL router and a network PCMCIA card for your Toshiba, (unless the Toshiba has built-in LAN). A router would be $200 - $400, and a LAN card about $100 very roughly speaking, plus $15 for a network patch cable. |

| 152845 | 2003-06-17 02:42:00 | Lol. I wonder why the ISP's allow such high useage limits then? Are they practically endorsing pirating? | PoWa (203) | ||
| 152846 | 2003-06-17 03:07:00 | They're a legitimate reasons to use that amount of traffic though. There are many freeware applications updated on a regular basis that could chew through a lot of bandwidth. | -=JM=- (16) | ||

My apologies, it appears that I have got it wrong . I had based my assumption on people's talk of having a second telephone line in addition to dialup being a similar price to having Jetstream with one telephone . This appears incorrect as I believe that two telephone lines cost $62 . 35, plus ISP dialup charge of $20 per month equals a total of $82 . 35 . This is approx . $15 per month cheaper than Jetstream . It all adds up when one is on a tight budget, unfortunately . |

For both Win32 and *nix. Same with Gaim, Firebird, Windows Updates. Or downloading a new linux distro before it has hit NZ mirrors. Of course it is going to be a push for the average user. But if you tried enough it would be more than possible. |

| 152850 | 2003-06-17 10:56:00 | For 10gig, I guess you could pay to watch streaming movies. Are there any places that offer streaming playback for movies?? You would need a fast connection to do it. 128k - nah! You could pay to download 100mp3's? Hmm that might only account for 500mb. Add a few linux distributions from international servers - if ure dum, impatient or a crazed linux enthusiast :) International gaming servers, if you are playing on them a few hours day will chew through a little useage. But really, I think the isps know that people will use kazaa etc, thats why the Gb limit is so high. Or maybe it has to be high, cos if they limited it to 500mb like with JetStream, people would go 'stuff this' and change plans for the quicker speed??? With telecom, you are either paying for speed at high price, or high Gb limit at low cost and low speed. One or the other. |
